Everytime someone tests, it demonstrates that #surveillancepricing is real and it is costing us money. "At home, I checked the prices again. The prices were largely higher than the library. I felt disoriented—and then I wondered if this was my fault. Had I done something to deserve these higher prices?" https://www.mozillafoundation.org/en/nothing-personal/surveillance-dynamic-pricing-legal-groceries-tickets/

🎯💸 Ever notice you and a friend get charged different prices for the exact same item, same store, same time? That's surveillance pricing: companies using your personal data to figure out exactly how much you're willing to pay. Consumer Reports found people can be charged up to 23% more for identical purchases. Instacart already paid a $60 million judgment over deceptive practices, and regulators are now digging into how it uses AI to set different prices for different customers. 🔗 https://www.forbes.com/sites/pamdanziger/2026/02/03/algorithmic-and-surveillance-pricing-pushes-retail-into-legal-minefield/ #SurveillancePricing #BigTech #ConsumerRights #AI #Privacy

Bravo Mayor Chow for taking action to protect Toronto residents from surveillance pricing. It’s time to end this predatory practice before it becomes normalized - yet another daily digital injustice. So far, the Carney government has promised vague action in the future, from a new agency that doesn’t even exist yet. Instead, we need a national ban on surveillance pricing right now. That’s what Premier Wab Kinew has done in Manitoba, what NDP premiers in waiting like Marit Stiles and Claudia Chender are fighting for, and what Mayor Chow is proposing. Your personal data should be yours alone, not a commodity for Big Tech and Big Retail to mine, sell, and use to rip you off. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-surveillance-pricing-ban-motion-9.7277965 #canada #surveillancepricing #AI #cdnpoli

New Jersey's legislature passed the Fair Price Protection Act, the first state ban on grocery "surveillance pricing" - using AI and your data to charge different shoppers different prices for the same item. It also freezes new electronic shelf labels for a year. California's AB 2564 would ban the practice statewide. #surveillancepricing #NewJersey #California #privacy #indigoprivacy

The federal government has finally acknowledged the practice of surveillance pricing, months after the NDP raised the alarm and sparked a national conversation about it. But the bill doesn’t ban this disturbing practice - in fact, it doesn’t even mention it by name. Instead, it just promises vague regulatory action in the future. In contrast, Wab Kinew’s NDP government in Manitoba is simply making the practice illegal. That’s the only way to stop big tech and big grocery chains from teaming up to gouge consumers. We’ve put this issue on the table, and we’ll keep building public pressure on the government to act decisively: today’s bill does nothing definitive to protect Canadians from this very real threat. https://www.thestar.com/politics/federal/carney-governments-privacy-legislation-targets-data-use-surveillance-pricing/article_f0790b3e-f42c-42a4-bc11-51f7e75e5771.html #cdnpoli #surveillancepricing #NDP

#Maryland Is First to Ban #AI #Grocery #PriceGauging A #state #law that goes into effect in October prohibits grocery stores & third-party delivery services from using consumer data to boost #prices. The practice — supported by #ArtificialIntelligence & known as #DynamicPricing or #SurveillancePricing — can lead to 2 consumers paying different amounts for the same item from the same retailer, at roughly the same time. #surveillance #tech #regulation #economy #inflation https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/01/business/surveillance-pricing-groceries-maryland.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share
