Before, Mount Gambier had two full-time stoma nurses supporting 200+ patients across the South East. Now? One nurse, one day a week. Patients in their 80s are driving 450km to Adelaide when things go wrong. David Platt had to teach a brand-new nurse how to change a bag because her training never covered it.
The local health network says they're recruiting. But the course costs $14k and takes a year. Meanwhile, the position sits empty and patients pay the price.
This isn't a unique story - it's what happens when regional health is treated as an afterthought. Staff leave, positions go unfilled, and the community is expected to 'be patient.'
A stoma nurse in every regional hospital with the need. Train locals. Fund the positions. Stop treating regional Australians like second-class patients.
