Umberto Pizzi has died, goodbye to the photographer who told 60 years of Italian history.
Umberto Pizzi, the photographer who documented 60 years of Italian history, immortalizing celebrities, politicians, and figures of high society, died at the age of 89. The announcement was made by the Fatto Quotidiano website, with which he had collaborated for over ten years.
Born in Zagarolo in 1937, Pizzi began photographing in 1968 and never stopped since. Every day, he would ride his scooter, always with his camera around his neck, to capture moments that would later enter the collective imagination. He captured the years of the Dolce Vita, great love stories, such as that between Liz Taylor and Richard Burton, but also power, Silvio Berlusconi’s entry into politics, the vices and customs of Italian society, particularly the Roman aristocracy.
He was also a war photojournalist for FAO in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Jordan. There are many photographs that appeared on Italian and international publications, including Time, People Magazine and Sunday Express Magazine. In the 2000s he collaborated with the website Dagospia, publishing the books Cafonal and Ultracafonal.
