We sometimes take a backroad between Saluda, NC and Tryon, NC called NC 176. It's a wiggly, rather mountain road next to the North Pacolet River. In 2024 when #Helene devastated so much of Western North Carolina, a big stretch of this road was closed. It's been 2 years, and we were just in the area, and wondered what is going on with recovery. Here's the answer, via an excellent local video, taken only last month: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhiNd9aIxv4 #Hurricane #Flood

#ClimateChange goosed #hurricane wind strength by 18 mph since 2019, study says "The analysis found 84% of hurricanes between 2019 and 2023 were more intense than they would have been without climate change. The wind speeds of the hurricanes were cranked up by an average of 18 mph, which caused 30 of them to go up at least one category higher on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale." https://apnews.com/article/hurricanes-climate-change-helene-beryl-milton-florida-24c2cbbb58d85903c22f40b9690e28f6

Roughly 5,000 North Carolina homeowners affected by Hurricane Helene are awaiting help from the state. But records show problems like rigid rules and insufficient staffing, which occurred in a previous rebuilding program, are starting to surface. https://www.propublica.org/article/hurricane-helene-housing-recovery-program-lessons?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mastodon-post #News #NorthCarolina #Government #Hurricane #Housing #Family #House
