Soltanto questa notte, il presidente Donald Trump si diceva certo che la guerra contro l’Iran non sarebbe durata ancora a lungo. Eppure, questa mattina è stato smentito dal suo fedelissimo Pete Hegseth che, al contrario, prevede ancora mesi difficili.
Secondo il Wall Street Journal, il capo del Pentagono ha prorogato fino al 2027 il dispiegamento delle truppe statunitensi nel teatro di guerra mediorientale. Una decisione che, secondo gli esperti militari interpellati dalla testata americana, alimenta il rischio che il conflitto con Teheran possa protrarsi fino al prossimo anno. Quel che è certo è che il mantenimento di 50.000 truppe nella regione consente al presidente americano Donald Trump di avere grande flessibilità per valutare le prossime mosse.

Una di queste, segnalata dal Wall Street Journal, vedrebbe il tycoon convinto che gli attacchi limitati tuttora in corso e la forte pressione economica sulla Repubblica islamica dell’Iran possano spingere il regime di Mojtaba Khamenei ad alzare bandiera bianca, smantellando il proprio programma nucleare. In alternativa, il regime potrebbe addirittura crollare, dando il via a una nuova fase politica per il Paese mediorientale.

A decision that, according to military experts consulted by the American publication, fuels the risk that the conflict with Tehran could last until next year. What is certain is that maintaining 50,000 troops in the region allows President Donald Trump to have great flexibility to assess future moves.
