For eight decades, Western nations insisted that the horrors of the Holocaust had transformed global ethics. They built institutions—the United Nations, the Genocide Convention, the International Criminal Court—designed to prevent future atrocities. They taught generations of children that the world had learned its lesson, that “Never Again” was a universal commitment rather than a slogan.
Gaza has revealed that this lesson was never learned. And it has shown that Western governments, including Canada’s, have abandoned even the pretense of universal human rights.
