#Fedilab 3.42.0-beta-1 is available for beta testers. It adds a boost visibility option, a remove button in thread composition, an unread DM badge in the bottom menu, a mixed conversation mode, and announcement badges. Long presses often give access to hidden features in #Fedilab. For instance, just long press a URL to get more options. You can even check redirects and visit the destination directly, bypassing the tracking redirect.

I apologize about the latest 3.41.0 release of #Fedilab that introduced a deceptive UX. Collections work with the #Mastodon API on instances running 4.6 (currently in release candidate). I should have added a safeguard depending on the Mastodon release. I am really sorry for that.

#Fedilab 3.41.0 is available. This release adds Collections support, ready for the upcoming Mastodon 4.6. You can create, edit, delete and browse collections, manage their members, and you get notified when someone adds you, with the option to remove yourself. You can now tap the ALT badge to read a media description without opening it. It also fixes timeline gaps, the app refreshing on every open, and the battery drain caused by animated emojis. After a full week of work on #HolosSocial, I will deploy the new relay code tomorrow to support multi-device, and compile the apps. Next week I will be back to #Fedilab. Switching too much between projects doesn't help, but spending more than a week on a single project is not a good move either. Fedilab and Holos are two big projects that deserve a balanced approach. Thank you for your patience.

Most people know about messages, photos and videos on the #Fediverse. But the #ActivityPub protocol actually defines several object types, each one distinct and more or less compatible across apps:

  • Note: short post (Mastodon)
  • Article / Page: long text or shared link (WriteFreely, Lemmy)
  • Image (Pixelfed)
  • Video (PeerTube)
  • Audio (Funkwhale)
  • Event with date and place (Mobilizon)

Concerning #Fedilab, with close to 8 million messages indexed, I think #HolosDiscover now has enough content to be worth integrating. Full API support would allow pinning tailored timelines and interacting with new content. This would be particularly useful for small instances. I’ve tried Tusky and Fedilab for Masto. Neither is terrible but like, both have probs that mean I have to use both.

Tusky:

  • No quote support (still)
  • Doesn’t find all replies
  • Emoji support weird

Fedilab:

  • Can’t load comments in long reply chain
  • Refresh doesn’t always work
  • Hard to follow complex convos

…so what else is there to try?

Jestem tu od niedawna. Zacząłem od zwykłej apki #mastodon i było spoko. Potem przeszedłem przez #fedilab i poczułem się troszkę przytłoczony, nie jestem tak głęboko w fedi żeby tego wszystkiego potrzebować. Jeszcze. Niedawno odpaliłem za to #moshidon i od razu się zakochałem. Wszystko jest takie ładne, czytelne, gładkie, proste. Mega. 👌
