Canadians, #fediforum regulars, and those of you who are unconference-curious - are you interested in checking out the seemingly *very* un-conferenced https://reimaginefestival.ca ? I've just signed on. The "schedule" runs August 12 - 26th, but the platform is open now for those who wish to participate or co-create, and it looks like it includes recurring sessions to set up for those who want to convene sessions.

Social media is in a crisis. The data is accumulating. Here is one: https://blog.incogni.com/digital-fatigue-and-burnout/ We need better forms of interacting online than what the big platforms give us. And group chat is certainly not the final answer. Anybody working on this? Yes! And you can meet some of us at #FediForum! 1/3

@hongminhee@hollo.social @liaizon@social.wake.st @Edent@mastodon.social @north@xn--8r9a.com @Profpatsch@mastodon.xyz (1/3) Report back from #FediForum last week. Held a good session on #GloballyInclusive handles. Just a few attendees, but one knew the technical issues deeply and was well connected to ActivityPub design. Session notes will likely appear at https://fediforum.org/topics/#topic-internationalization in a few weeks. For now, here is a summary: #i18n #GloballyInclusiveFediverse #Fediverse #Multilingual

@elgg@indieweb.social Well, we did have @ben@werd.social give a keynote at #FediForum last year! :-) Consider coming to a future FediForum and giving a demo to get more exposure in this community. @silverpill@mitra.social @julian @fedimtl @ozoned @reiver@mastodon.social @johannab@cosocial.ca @paige@masto.canadiancivil.com @mayel

One can learn many things at #FediForum. For example, about Rebollita, a soup from Tuscany, which is apparently @ivan's favorite food. Does that recipe sound about right? https://www.themediterraneandish.com/ribollita-recipe/

I was blown away by the intensity and quality of the follow-up discussion on "Growing the Open Social Web" at a #FediForum session yesterday. And the sheer number of people who showed up! Somehow this must be an important topic to a lot of people!! 😜 We will continue this discussion probably more regularly than twice a year at the regular FediForum. #FediForumFriday

I have a #FediForumFriday follow up question about the demo that EU-Haul demo (I can't remember who did it, sorry!) and Bsky: Can I use my bridged Bsky account (as in the one @anewsocial@mastodon.social creates when you bridge from Mastodon) and move that to an EU based Bsky server, and the bridge still work? If no, is that in the works? #FediForum

Thank you so much again to @j12t@j12t.social @anca@mastodon.xyz for a wonderful Fediforum. I'm putting this in writing. As I said at FediForum, I appreciate y'all so much that if I ever have another child I promise we'll name them after y'all. JohAnca. I expect they'll one day marry John Mastodon and bring about the golden age of the internet. #fediForum #fediforum2026 #john Mastodon #JohAnca

my whiplash/conflicting two big takeaways from #fediForum #1 - SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY but #2 - goddamit, we need to figure out funding these things (possibly including me? at least a bit).

@box464@mastodon.social oooh, that's intriguing. NOstr without knowing it's nostr I mean, though also "vintage vines". Some of the #fediForum stuff that just wrapped was brushing up against the idea that the TECH needs to be a little less visible to the human, so they can roll on in without a barrier. Signin' in!

And this was it for FediForum Day 3, and all of FediForum Spring 2026. Thanks to everybody who came, who demo'd, who presented, and the wonderful, and wonderfully intense and respectful and constructive discussions about all aspects of the Open Social Web that happened over the past three half-days. As usual, there is so much left to discuss! But don't worry, there will be a next #FediForum. If you want to be notified when registration opens, leave your info here: https://apps.fediforum.org/nextcloud/apps/forms/s/ci4R7TZnNEzDiXHDyFPQcM2G

Combining groups and payments into a fedi-forward service for content creators

<p>Unfortunately I was only able to join for the third and last day of FediForum, but the energy was quite strong even then!</p> <p>There were some interesting discussions with <a href="https://btfree.social/pub/actors/ozoned">@<bdi>ozoned@btfree.social</bdi></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/@reiver">@<bdi>reiver@mastodon.social</bdi></a> and others (<a href="https://cosocial.ca/@johannab">@<bdi>johannab@cosocial.ca</bdi></a>, <a href="https://j12t.social/@j12t">@<bdi>j12t@j12t.social</bdi></a>, etc) about fediverse payments and growing the open social web — this spanned two session slots, actually!</p> <p>One thing that came out strongly was the need for content creators to get paid. This <em>directly</em> echoes <a href="https://masto.canadiancivil.com/@paige">@<bdi>paige@masto.canadiancivil.com</bdi></a>'s talk from <a href="https://activitypub.space/category/22/fedimtl">@<bdi>fedimtl</bdi></a> earlier this year. The other half was reflecting on the lack of appropriate value-adds for donators, such as private groups. We have all of these things, but separately. Perhaps combining them into an easy-to-use service is the secret sauce that will open up the fediverse to content creators.[...] There is work with the Interledger Foundation (@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold) to make the financial side happen. There's ongoing work with CrowdBucks (@reiver@mastodon.social) to connect fediverse accounts with payment gateways. On the threadiverse side, each of us (NodeBB, Lemmy, Piefed) have support for private groups, but not federated private groups. This might be an opportunity for the threadiverse implementors to work together (especially with @mayel@bonfire.cafe and the rest of the SWICG Groups Task Force (@groups)) to bring federate private groups out of the realm of theoretical possibility and into reality.
