I got awarded by my EAA chapter for doing stuff. I hadn't even stopped to realize how I'm present at every function. I JUST LIKE AIRPLANES, YOU GUYS. #eaa #avgeek

Since I have been working on this ATC in Antarctica presentation for a friend to give to my #EAA chapter 3/2, tonight I decided to fly the route from down there at Phoenix Airfield (NZFX, ice runway) to Christchurch, NZ, about 2100NM. Took off, direct track was 343°, GPS had me flying 230°, correcting to 215° for a LEFT Xwind. But WX was showing as 98 kts from 309°, shoulda been correcting for a RIGHT Xwind. Summer is winter, up is down, left is right? Great circle route? #WTF is going on?

Went and worked to build this Antarctica presentation with my friend today before he gives the prez at my next #EAA meeting. Learnt a thing or three...like... Didja know that the soot from the jet engines on an ice runway attracts unwanted heat from sunlight, and melts/ruts the ice? They had to go out between C-17s and B757s with giant Zamboni-like bulldozers to "clean" the soot off. Also, wearing survival gear in flight is required south of 60 South. #TheMoreYouKnow

Now that I am retired from my decades-long career as my Ad Agency's Creative Director, graphic designer, etc., I do not get the opportunity to do much in this space. So I'm having a ball helping a friend prepare his presentation he will give 3/2 to my #EAA chapter on the three tours he spent as an Air Traffic Controller in #Antarctica. Harsh conditions, and no alternate if an #airplane got all the way into his airspace, low on fuel or facing +WX. Land on the ice runway or die trying. avgeeks

Just got back from my #EAA #Experimental #Aviation chapter meeting. Presenter was Mike Babcock, who built a full-competition Badlands Traveler and traveled the USA last season competing. Runs a full-race Yamaha snowmobile (snow machine?) three-cylinder engine with massive turbocharger. Gets off the ground in about 30' and lands at 50' "if he does it right." Went thru 3 engines last season, T/O power is 9800 RPM. He did not disclose T/O horsepower. Typical racer. #avgeeks #STOL
