Dawn this morning, September 8th, from Buck Hill!
My daughter started her senior year of high school this morning. Her school has an unofficial tradition where all of the seniors meet in front of the main campus building for a 'Senior Sunrise', then have a light breakfast before going to a 'Senior Experience' event. Real classes start tomorrow.
My daughter was a bit reluctant when I told her she'd need to leave the house before 5:30am to get to campus in time, which meant waking up even earlier. Being a sunrise junkie myself, I convinced her that for one morning, she could wake up super early and stand with her classmates and greet the sunrise for their final year together. "It's once in a lifetime", I told her, "Don't miss it!".
Heeding my advice, I decided that I would also get up, make sure she got going and then go to Buck Hill. And, wow! If this is an omen for the Class of 2027, then they are in for a spectacular year!

The Parade of Sail, Sail Boston 2026, part of the Sail250 Tour, photographed from Buck Hill on July 11th, 2026. (1/3)
I don't usually do any long distance photography in the warm weather months, but it was a nice day so I thought I would give this a try. I got setup just as the parade was getting underway at 9am and photographed continually until about 12:30p when my battery went dead.
The ships were traveling from east to west and there were generally three 'windows' where I could see them, between Long Island and Spectacle Island (these often have Deer Island in the background), between Spectacle Island and Thompson Island (with Winthrop in the background), and between Thompson Island and Castle Island (with Logan Airport in the background).
When I first started there was a lot of haze out over the water. That gradually burned off, but was quickly replaced with air turbulence as the air heated up. I have not had much luck making identifications of individual ships. I was hoping to find a simple parade order that might assist, but so far I have come up empty.
