True story. Back in the 1990s, I backpacked around Australia. Everyone I met there thought I was Canadian, not American. After seeing how some rowdy Texans were behaving at the hostel I was staying at, I stopped correcting people. I even had a Canadian fella think I was Canadian (and he was smitten with me and offered to marry me and make me officially Canadian). Yes, I've been ashamed of being American since 1977, when I saw through the patriotic hype of the "Spirit of '76" crappo!
