When the plant can’t burn coal anymore, what’s a coal plant town to do? For 75 years, Trenton, N.S., has played host to a coal-fired generating station, but the plant has to switch to another fuel by 2030 or shut down. Re-wetting drained peatlands restores their carbon-capture ability but eliminates their value as cropland. Installing solar panels provides a substitute income.
