Part of Daniela Astone’s series of figures placed in ethereal and surrealistic spaces, The Kiss echoes Gustav Klimt’s famous 1908 work, yet instead of an abstracted gold background, Astone surrounds the lovers with a mysterious creature that envelops and suspends them in mid-air. The dark form initially reads ominous, but the mood shifts as the nude figure leans into her partner. Her hands lightly caress and rest against the creature’s amorphous body. Her posture is relaxed, her eyes closed, and the intimacy feels tranquil rather than performative.
As a classical painter of the nude, Astone is attentive to depicting women at ease in their natural bodies-figures who pose with calm acceptance rather than fear of exploitation or self-consciousness. That theme, long present in art history, continues to speak to audiences today.
Technically, the sweeping black strokes draw inspiration from Japanese painting techniques. In the brighter areas, rain-like droplets fall from a blue/grey cloud in the background, adding an atmospheric softness that counterbalances the creature’s weight.
