@stib@aus.social @bencourtice@aus.social @jonshell@mastodon.energy Technology can be used one way or another. Thats why I used the gas cylinder example. You pay a one time deposit and keep as long as you need it. Without any costs. Then you change it at a dealer for a full one. This system works fine.
I guess you won't need venture capital at the current point. Nio is on a good way to set the standard. What means in a few years you either sell a car in China with a Nio-compatible battery or you don't sell cars at all. After that it is just a matter of time until thats adopted outside China.
I would compare that technology cycle to something like the VHS / Betamax wars. You win the country with the biggest market and go downhill from there.
@stib@aus.social @jonshell@mastodon.energy The issue is scale. The Idea is not new. There was a startup in Israel and one in Europe. But they failed.
The infrastructure only works if you have a standard and enough power to enforce it. Nio has that kind of more or less state backed power to set the standard. Other car makers have to follow that after it is established. After that threshold is crossed battery changing becomes common as fuel pumps.
But with a whole flock of car makers who not even want EVs there is no chance to get over the threshold for it work.
And no, you do not need the "rent-a-battery" model for that. You can also pay a deposit and for a battery once. - Same modell as used for gas-cylinders.
