I was thinking about reading about a “celebutante” in NYC in Spy magazine in the 80s. She was famous for being famous. She went to clubs and got her picture taken. My friends and I thought this was funny and insane. Now it’s how the whole world works.

I found this super interesting. In the US we think of having transit, walkable neighborhoods, public places where people interact as frills or luxuries but they are actually determinants of health, both physical and mental.

More recently they’ve been letting ICE use their parking lots at staging areas. Ultimately they all answer to shareholders. This would be less of a problem if Congress had the will to keep Trump operating within the law.

@eruwero @scalzi the things these guys think about are quite informative. They are convinced AGI is almost here, even though we barely understand anything about how self awareness occurs in animals (including our species). They think spending on conferences on AGI is better than, say, mosquito nets to prevent malaria because they might save trillions of people who don’t exist.

I am thinking of people (& i think the Jalopnik folks tend to be like this) who love the physical act of driving, vehciles that perform well, etc. ... who tend to be skilled drivers (judgment may vary). I think there's a whole different breed of driver than just likes the power of a car they can barely operate, and that's why the Suburban was invented.
