The world's top 25 bulk wine exporters: 2000 vs. 2024. Many intriguing insights. Here is just one: Spain surged from #3 to #1 in bulk wine exports between 2000 and 2024, nearly sextupling its volume — but its price per liter was cut in half, from $1.02 to $0.52. Italy, the former leader, took the opposite path: cutting volume by 60% while more than doubling its price from $0.37 to $0.89/L. Two very different strategies for competing in the global bulk wine market. There are many more surprises.

France's wine exports to the US in 2025 saw a substantial avg price decline of 11.8% compared to 2024, with red wines more affected than whites. Red Languedoc-Roussillon (−24.3%) and red Bordeaux (−22.3%) recorded the largest drops; even Champagne declined 13.1% (€37.07 → €32.23/liter). Only white Alsace wines showed a modest price increase of 1.4%.
It's unclear whether the price decline is tariff-induced or reflects a compositional shift toward less expensive wines within each category.

Vineyard Prices of Selected Bordeaux AOPs (1991–2024). Bordeaux vineyard prices have fallen across the board since 2021. From their 2021 peak, the average Gironde price fell by 22%. Pauillac and Saint-Émilion vineyard prices fell by even more — 24%. (2024 Pomerol prices are not available.) Land prices are forward-looking by nature and tell us about expectations, as they capitalize all expected future rents into a single present value.

Dr. Harold Bogg's "Tawny Cocaine Port" wasn't Port wine, but cocaine syrup with grape juice. In the late 19th century, when cocaine was legal, it was deemed a great cure for drunks. The legal landscape began to shift in the early 20th century, culminating in the Harrison Narcotics Tax Act of 1914, which effectively restricted cocaine (and opiates) to medical use only.

U.S. wine imports fell sharply in 2025, dropping $565 million (−8.3%) to $6.2 billion. The biggest losers in dollar terms were the top markets: New York (−$106M), California (−$102M), and Texas (−$80M). South Carolina saw a stunning −49.5% collapse. Pennsylvania was a notable exception, recording a 23.2% increase. The overall picture reflects a U.S. wine import market under significant pressure in 2025, likely shaped by shifting consumer demand, inventory corrections and trade policy uncertainty

France's wine exports to the U.S. in 2025 saw a substantial avg price decline of 11.8% compared to 2024, with red wines generally more affected than whites. Red Languedoc-Roussillon (−24.3%) and red Bordeaux (−22.3%) recorded the largest drops; even Champagne declined 13.1% (€37.07 → €32.23/liter). Only white Alsace wines showed a modest price increase of 1.4%.
It remains unclear whether the price decline is tariff-induced or reflects a compositional shift toward less expensive wines.

New data shows French wine exports to the US declined 15.9% in value in 2025. The steepest contractions were for Languedoc-Roussillon (-52.6%) and red Bordeaux (-32.1%).
This decline owes more to falling prices than volumes — prices fell 11.8%, volumes fell 8%. Red Languedoc-Roussillon (-24.3%) and red Bordeaux (-22.3%) stand out; only Alsace posted a price increase (1.4%). Whether these price changes reflect a tariff response or a compositional shift toward less expensive wines remains unclear
