On any given day I'm some subset of computing, video games, retro stuff, and that weird knockoff thing that fell behind a shelf in the back of a thrift store.

I was beginning to wonder why nothing's been updated in several days https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-announce/2026-July/000294.html

that video is a 15-minute-long ai-generated mess that doesn't actually have any useful information in it.

I honestly have no idea why people have a hard time with this. if you look at a calendar and you want to navigate to a specific date, you locate the month first and then the date, so it makes sense to say it the way you're going to navigate to it (you probably already know the year if you're looking at a wall calendar)

I'd settle for a new edition of the Internet Yellow Pages

postfix has a rat-mail-adjacent mascot. that's pretty close

Finally got around to trying the Virtual Boy shell for switch 2. It turns out that I have steamy eyes and fogged up the display within 5 minutes, which is pretty close to my experience with the original Virtual Boy, so that's fun

found a Discovery Kids digital camera at a thrift store, but it looks like the only way to get the pictures off it is to connect it to a Windows computer. that's inconvenient

in the alt text for panel 3, I think you might mean 'feigns' instead of 'faints'

we haven't invented a strong enough word to describe my feelings when a search engine searches for what it thinks I meant instead of doing what I told it to do

making it opt-out is entitlement. you're not asking me permission, you're telling me that you're taking it unless I stop you.

because I will do my best to turn off and avoid as many of those things as I can for as long as I can, even if I have to accept what most people might call a degraded computing experience to do it, what remains is mine

why do you think you're entitled to know what happens on my computer?

using genAI to make an image for an article about sustainability sounds like satire. I didn't think I'd actually see it

@vampiress@eigenmagic.net I'm assuming Mario Paint counts as a game, since that's what gets my vote

a reasonable amount would be around $250, which means that I buy one as infrequently as possible

it's none of your business what happens on my computer unless I decide to tell you. "we're taking it unless you tell us not to" is entitlement speaking and writing a thousand words trying to make me feel bad about denying access changes nothing

I'm torn whether this is cognitive dissonance or a result of an industry containing a significant fraction of people who apparently hate the field they work in

I spent 11 straight Christmas seasons working in a retail store in a shopping mall. at some point the songs stopped inducing joy. it took a few years of detox to get my Jolly Levels low enough that I could tolerate it again
