P.S.: I guess this is supposed to be the disclaimer. But it's not 'arduous' to determine intelligence in machines, it's something that requires careful thought and planning (heh).
One might for example benchmark on tasks and then look for a latent variable that predicts performance *across tasks*. That would be your "machine g" and that you could argue is machine intelligence.
The current approach is just showcasing features. Which made for an interesting read, but hardly supports AGI claims.

So optimizing machines for measures of high g in humans should not be taken to mean that the machines are developing their own g. They *might* be and it's certainly interesting that LLMs are developing capacities across tasks without explicit design or training for these tasks. But we should always distinguish the measure of a thing from the thing itself, otherwise we're led astray about the actual cognition that's going on under the hood. The Sparks paper starts off not doing this. [3/n, n=3]

Perhaps some people want to argue that there's just behaviour and that's fine, but we can't skip over the fact that intelligence research has focused on a factor g that somehow manages to predict scores on a wide range of behaviours. That factor is what we call intelligence.
This is relevant to discussions on machine cognition, because relations between g and performances on a cognitive task are not necessarily meaningful there. Their correspondence is a fact about humans [2/n]
Look, I do not know a lot about AI and am pretty much a lay person when it comes to probing the capacities of LLMs. But I do know a little bit about intelligence and cognition and that 'Sparks' paper is not exactly killing it by using Gottfredson 94 to define intelligence.
Even sidestepping ethical complications of that paper (which we shouldn't), it's conceptually murky -- conflating measures of intelligence (e.g. planning capacity) with intelligence itself. [1/n]

Does someone know of good (cognitive psychology) writing/research on the transfer of classroom practices to parenting? I keep seeing classroom findings on e.g. motivation, praise and learning pop up in discourse about raising children, but to me it's not obvious that teaching and parenting can borrow principles off each other.
