@foone@digipres.club it’s cause the hard part of human computer interaction is the mind meld and at the end of the day, every ui is born from a cli poc first, so most give up before the human part since they solved “the hard problem” already which was more intellectually stimulating than figuring out how to apply the solution for people Speaking as a ui engineer that has always specialized in solving the “problem” after the “problem” is “solved”

@samir@mastodon.functional.computer I’m currently in TS again for work and err towards only signing function signatures (functional programming yay) because it’s bad when I’m comparing myself against myself, but I don’t choose the stack— my actual research and approach is all vanilla js.

@samir@mastodon.functional.computer this is the smoking gun I always point to with TS— it has less to do with anything we actually think of as programmers and more to do with the consequences of putting a Turing complete language inside your application logic. https://www.richard-towers.com/2023/03/11/typescripting-the-technical-interview.html The consequence is layers of profound indirection that only manifests when the team of people can no longer maintain it, which is how we got ai to think through the Turing completeness wrapping our Turing completeness, when me and three others were objectively shipping faster with just rails and jquery over a decade ago lol

@samir@mastodon.functional.computer I think it’s the react + typescript brainworms I was one of the earliest to integrate react into the rails asset pipeline in what became the stack for a 1mil ARR partnership product It was possible to do performance react and rails in 2016, the only diff now is typescript for “stability” and “eliminating a certain class of bugs”

Danced on Joey’s grave today.

You really need to work to find a note.

And you really need to fight to play a tune.

I fought.

We had electromagnetic disturbance.

I don’t film my clown shows because it breaks the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth walls.

Today wasn’t a clown show though.

It was a rite of passage.

And dead clowns can’t touch screens.

But you can hear the gimbal I’m using as a tripod have the buttons toyed with in the footage (will upload to the archive later)

So after a minute and a half the video doesn’t die so much as it goes limp.

Which is funny because all my tests in San Francisco clearly demonstrate it can run for at least 15 minutes before “glitching out”

But in a clown’s graveyard in London, I danced in time and something happened in less than two minutes.

After I went back to Covent Garden.

Said “Hi” to Diego. And asked if he was about to go up as he shoved two slices of pizza down his throat before doing his Charlie Chaplin routine.

And I went up to his hat after and he said, “No.” And I was confused and he said, “save your money, buy props, and tell me you’ll do shows here.”

I told him days ago that I’d become a mime one day. That was the fourth version of his show I saw.

And I saw Dan after his show and he said it’d been rough today. The crowds look good, but nobody’s tipping.

That’s pretty rough when your finale is juggling knives on top of extended unicycle.

Same as Michal. Same bit, same pull. Less than usual, dramatically so.

After his third show today, that’s the lowest I’ve ever seen him. The show only goes on with patrons in the audience.

We’ve chatted every day the past week as my idea of a good time on vacation is hanging out on, in, and around the pitch with the street artists.

I got a lot of footage this week of circus artists doing high end street craft.

The only bad footage I got was with Juma today.

He did great.

However, there were “attention seekers” and he needed to ask some people to leave after they thought it was normal to walk through the pitch as he was ten feet above the ground, about to do a handstand on three tiers of cigar boxes.

That’s why I was filming, because I just told him that his finale absolutely surprised me and that I didn’t see it coming.

He said, “I never do either”

And after the show, the attention seeker of a man was all up in the face of a patron that was also pro “the drunk guy needs to go”

And silly little me with no need to make money on the pitch decided to intervene and that’s the closest I’ve even been to a fight.

And he said he could knock me out and I said, “I bet you could because I don’t fight”

And I guess that’s fighting words because his friend got in the middle to hold him back as I held up my little red clown nose and juggling balls and said “hey man, I’m just a street performer too”

And you could see in his friend’s eyes that he’s also tired of this shit and that his friend is too drunk and nobody got in a fight today but I really think if I hadn’t injected myself where I didn’t belong (well him and his wife did ruin an otherwise great show AND great footage but whenever) that he was seconds away from throwing a punch at the other guy and his friend was not there yet to hold him back like he was for me.

So I walked away and came back a minute later so he’d be gone and I could hang out with my friends again.

Michal did one more show and he was much happier after that fourth show because everything went right that time.

And the schedule was over but there was still 20 minutes left until nine, so the pitch was free for me.

I put on my nose and I juggled.

And two boys came to watch immediately.

And when I started juggling with kicks, they sat down.

And I pulled out the spoons.

And I started a rhythm.

And I handed one boy the spoons.

And then I juggled as he played.

And I tossed the other boy a ball and he tossed it back and we did that until his brother wanted to trade the spoons for passing juggling balls to the clown mime in the square.

And we played for a few brief minutes before I gave them a quick finale and a high five and as I walked away I heard them say to each other “that was so much fun”

And it doesn’t take a lot to be a positive influence in the world.

It’s mostly about showing up and not being so self absorbed that you want fight street performers.

You and Thiel both, my dude.

Obligatory, in 2013 at the university I worked at, I was the best at CSS, objectively.

A war room was assembled.

I was summoned.

An entire classroom of developers.

A single mission.

Enable canvas for the university.

We had a week before open enrollment.

I walked out of there after four hours because I only had to do the CSS skin.

I was called lucky.

The war was brutal, but we won.

We got canvas online.

Only a single student enrolled in a single canvas course that year.

If I did need to cast a little shade though

I used to work in global payments for a button on your TV remote

The reason I never got into cryptocurrency is because the most competitive people I’ve ever worked with had the data and the data is that it is always going to be a speculative asset.

And in the off chance it stabilizes, then that’s maybe something worth integrating with— if that actually “unlocks” more customers or increases revenue marginally.

But all the most fascinating payment experiments I engaged with was “how are people in the world currently conducting transactions?” And then integrating with existing consumer habits.

How vain to believe you can reprogram an entire planet or universe with your hot take on money.

That’s why I didn’t glue a monetization engine onto my devkit

If you’re curious, what it’s like for me to evaluate tech for wanting to connect to silly in some way it goes like this

“I speak JSON, is it possible to communicate with your system through that as a representation?”

And if the answer is yes, we’re compatible.

And if you have docs that are easy to use, I’ll create a prototype elf that does the absolute bare minimum to prove compatibility

Or if you’re a platform, I can put a kernel and any elves you want in their respective domains.

Or rather, those were the things I used to enjoy doing.

I think I’m pretty over computers, so I think my social computing ambitions are tapering off and I’m just going to make art since that’s why I spent so long forging a studio.

Just being fully transparent, that’s what’s been on my mind. I spent years going to the archive almost every Friday. All I needed was a single person to understand my nonsense. I’m at the mouse house now. I get the US is not safe for many and that traveling here is impossible or undesirable in the fullest. I’m here. I just needed ONE win. For years. That was the struggle to me. If I’m not invited when dweb is here why go to dweb when it is there? No regrets on putting myself out there to help build community and to become a clown. But dweb is a great personal cost to me from every dynamic that’s just not justifiable at this phase in my life.

Won’t be at camp on the other side of the world this summer.

I kept thinking about it but I’m mentoring an intern at work over the summer and getting that right feels very important to me.

I miss all of you and wanting to see you is strictly for personal reasons and sadly dweb to me was a sad sad sad attempt at professionalism. I needed visibility to find money to feed me family. That was an abject failure.

As a pro, my architecture has been refined through people I’ve met through camp as well as my philosophy to computing, but neither of them have fundamentally changed in the past five years.

If you want a LARP, it’s more nonfiction than fiction, but the clown busk has mostly been a 1:1 endeavor, so networking through my absence— there’s an entire subsystem of humans on the other side of all my nonsense about elves living in your computer.

I think if you found out everyone that has been integrated with, you could figure out how to decentralize the clown from dweb entirely by figuring out hour to bridge those worlds without me.

I’m competitive enough to be secure that there is no more elegant solution than Silly, so even though I won’t physically be there, my digital presence will be inadmissible, much to the chagrin of more funded distributed platforms that lobbied for me to not be at the dweb seminar last summer in my own hometown.

@be @cwebber My speculation is roughly, further bifurcation of coding networks. Similar to how people retreated to intimate private groups when internet public sphere became disconnected from the people it served. I think whatever the next forge is will solve for only distributing source code to trusted nodes in the graph. Hackathons will be how we connect and do the “yeah you’re human and we’re made eye contact, here’s access to my sub graph of relational software” Because clearly boundaries aren’t a thing.

Spent some time brainstorming— my recommendation is a concept for a documentary

“The Good Neighborhood Data Center”

We start with a title that gets at the heart

  • what is data and where does it live

And we miss all the drama of explaining the dystopia, because people get it now, they really do, what they don’t have are

  • hope
  • alternatives

That’s what the documentary will deliver

We travel back in time and highlight how information has been passed on generation by generation

Then we go deep on the archive itself, really highlighting how the archive is a Lab for Libraries and showing how everything on earth fits in one church.

From there we trace out the archive’s partner libraries, leaving the archive behind but following the legacy and influence the same way we established passing information from generation to generation.

Just an honest, “the library is a global network of people that care and that’s all it ever was and ever will be”

Gotta go back to work, you’ve got this, pulling for you guys!

Honest feedback from someone that’s never worked there but been around enough to be the ear for people that don’t feel heard?

The archive needs an actual way to distance themselves from

  • crypto
  • ai

The public is losing faith in those “institutions” and they are irrelevant to the archive’s mission for “universal access to all knowledge” and actually are starting to risk that mission.

Speaking for myself, the AI Ben Franklin bit left me feeling like the humanity of the audience failed to connect with the humanity of the archive, for what gain?

@kenshirriff i put the "typing simulator" up on the homepage since it ties together so much of my work into one demo. when entering keys, it triggers the synth-- i need to map all the chords to progressions now, but all the basic ones are mapped. you don't need a guitar hero guitar to play it, but it does work better on a gamepad. would be really interesting to connect to a keyset. up/down will "strum" and enter the chord as a key-- nothing held is going to be a period and a space, respectively (up/down)-- j,k,l,h,u are the five buttons, so you can use that to simulate the five chords and w/s are up/down; carry over, but left/right will move up and down midi notes, players start on middle c. https://sillyz.computer/

@kenshirriff I took some time to process the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_frequency and map it from more ergonomic to less ergonomic. i'll be publishing an app i'm calling "typing simulator" in the near future that makes "1 week" seem like nothing, once turned into rhythm based video game 🙃 const characterMapping = { '00000': [' ', '.'], '10101': ['?', '!'], '11101': ['@', '#'], '10111': [':', ';'], '11111': ['<', '>'], '10110': [',', '"'], '10000': ['a', 'A'], '01000': ['e', 'E'], '00100': ['i', 'I'], '00010': ['o', 'O'], '00001': ['u', 'U'], '11000': ['t', 'T'], '01100': ['n', 'N'], '00110': ['s', 'S'], '00011': ['h', 'H'], '10010': ['r', 'R'], '01010': ['d', 'D'], '00101': ['l', 'L'], '10100': ['c', 'C'], '01001': ['m', 'M'], '11100': ['w', 'W'], '01110': ['f', 'F'], '00111': ['g', 'G'], '10011': ['y', 'Y'], '11010': ['p', 'P'], '01101': ['b', 'B'], '01011': ['v', 'V'], '11001': ['k', 'K'], '11110': ['j', 'J'], '01111': ['x', 'X'], '10001': ['q', 'Q'], '11011': ['z', 'Z'] }

@kenshirriff i’ve looked at the keyset many times at the CHM i’ve been turning the five buttons on the guitar hero guitar into a real instrument, so i think a lot about how i imagined the keyset would work i honestly didn’t envision a 1:1 mapping with binary, that’s like qwerty being abcdef i thought it would have been arranged by frequency of letters to ease of use, for example, vowels being the single key mappings, like: 10000 - a 01000 - e 00100 - i 00010 - o 00001 - u anyways, thanks for sharing, i appreciate the deep dive

so i've started the process of hard forking sillyz. i haven't had a real job in two and a half years.

sillyz was reckless and scary and fun and i really did become a clown, a very good thing.

i made a lot of friends. i got connected to san francisco's comedy scene, even if i've been on hiatus the past year trying to make sillyz be serious. i connected with the underground technology scene where computers are more art than science and i became a musician. the common thread in who i've become is improvisation. i've become a better listener in all aspects of my life, which has made be more comfortable in who i am and how i communicate.

if i ever had one goal, it was to insulate sillyz so that it just _would be_ and that no one could ever take it away from us. that's accomplished. sillyz, just is, whether anyone likes it or not, we all have it, whether we know it or not.

if i ever had a second goal, it would be to make it so that i can make a living off the core engine instead of the core engine of some arbitrary technical overlord. this actually seems like it might pan out this year.

i'll still be playing with and poking around on sillyz, but i'll be talking about it less as my comedy notebook super computer and more vaguely in terms of whatever someone willing to pay me wants to hear it is. that'll all be on not here though-- marketing boring.

for everyone that's followed along on my antics so far-- thanks. and the inside joke is just beginning. whatever comes next, even if i don't say it explicitly, silly will be and has always been running the whole show.

restoring identity today and found the usual suspects, but I'm going to pin them on my profile for safe keeping and maybe I should just do a write up on how I use these sometime
