for pride month, here's something i genuinely can't remember if i've posted about before: i've been on hrt for about 5 months! it's been going quite well so far and i am very excited for what the future holds. i was actually very hesitant before starting as i wasn't sure if i would be happy with the more permanent effects - i'm nonbinary, right, the worry was that it'd be too much and i'd actually get dysphoric about it - but i'm now neutral-to-excited about all of it. in hindsight i feel silly for procrastinating to think about it for as long as i did; i keep finding myself genuinely surprised, over and over again, at how i have reacted to the changes.

ultimately, this is just an anecdote. if you have the same worry i did, i can't guarantee it'll turn out the same way for you. but i will say that i am very grateful to my trans friends for encouraging me to finally start hrt. what eventually got me was the realisation that i could never truly know if it was for me unless i actually tried it. i could choose to do it and find out, but truly choosing not to was impossible, because i would always have the ability to change my mind and always be wondering if i should. the decision of whether or not to start hrt was always an illusion: the only thing i could ever decide was when.

@nycki ooh Bullet! I've had a lot of fun with this one playing with the three minute timer (and provided OST) because in that context a few of the characters feel like game design pranks being pulled on you. the one called Memory where you draw your entire deck at the beginning of the game but don't redraw discarded cards turns into this ridiculous thing of desperately riffling through a hand of like 20 cards trying to remember where you put one specific pattern (or if it's already in your discard pile). and there's the character in the other version of the game whose patterns, instead of clearing bullets directly, make you add up the numbers on the bullets and consult a table to see what that does. having one player in the game forced to do math to a timer is just really funny to me.

@milobyte@sunny.garden yeah! (my one take with units is that I wish numbers for electrical energy were more commonly given in joules instead of watt-hours. i get why watt-hours are more convenient to use, but it leads to apparently silly outcomes like energy efficiency ratings for appliances being quoted in kWh per year.)

@milobyte@sunny.garden living somewhere where food energy is typically measured in kilojoules instead of kilocalories makes the equivalence really clear, so i love thinking about this stuff. 8,700 kJ per day means the average human power draw is 100 watts. which is probably pretty close to what the main desktop computer i use averages too.
