No point getting upset about this, it’s inevitable. So many FOSS programmers work thanklessly for hours and now there’s some tool to take loads of that work away, of course they’re going to use it. I know loads of people complain about it but used responsibly it can take care of so much of the mundane work. I used to spend 10% of my time writing code then 90% debugging it. If I do that 10% then give it to Claude to go over I find it just works.

Why are these companies wanting to pay to infuriate me? If I want to watch something and I’m suddenly interrupted by a 90 second unskippable intrusion I’m not going to have a positive relationship with your company.

With the new login screen coming and the unified theming engine allegedly close, I hope the Discover app gets redone. I find it pretty slow and ugly, especially compared to the Gnome equivalent (whatever it’s called). It gives me constant errors about useless stuff as well, I often find an app in there and just download it in the command line.

Most of them seemed to be giving it a fair go but Linus himself seemed to be treating it more like a Cheap Car Challenge from Top Gear. He was cracking (bad) jokes about “just Linux things” before he’d even started and he gave up pretty much straight away. The problems he was having with Discord seemed more like Discord issues than Linux issues.

I kinda get it though. I think every single time in my life I’ve sent a document in the non-Microsoft format I’ve got a reply saying they couldn’t open it. That’s from LibreOffice and from Mac.

There’s these sort of crystal things you can use instead of deodorant. You rub them on your pits when they wet and they don’t produce any smell but block the bad ones. I used one for a while, it was good.

How are Anthropic left wing? I thought they were regarded as being not much better than ChatGPT?

Flameshot is great for this. Probably overkill for many but it’s perfect if you need it for documenting things.

They should make it a law to require adequate parental controls to exist on a phone in a way that parents can use them, then teach the parents how to use them. If your kid goes and starts viewing porn then it’s your own fault.

Apps were still kinda new at the time and social media was shit hot. iPhones were still premium products and most people didn’t have one.
I think a lot of people don’t realise that when the iPhone first came out it didn’t have apps. They eventually released an upgrade so that you could pin webpages to the homepage. I remember Apple arguing that web stuff was so good now you didn’t need apps.
From what I recall around that time the Kin never really generated that much interest. It wasn’t being aimed as a product to replace the iPhone and was targeted at the kind of people who nowadays would sit on their phone and scroll TikTok. There was a lot of change in those days; social media was still pretty new, useful internet in your phone was pretty new (it’d been around for years but it wasn’t so expensive to this point nobody had used it, iPhone made constant internet connections a thing) touch screens were still new and sexy, and more I forget about. The idea that your phone was this little mobile computer that you carried around wasn’t really there yet and they were still mostly for communicating.

I always get my kid a gift my wife will hate. She’s still genuinely annoyed about the fart gun I got last year.
That and getting drunk.

Are you just looking for file backup? I haven’t used it but most people just seem to be switching to NextCloud.
