@impactology That's very encouraging. In my generation certification made a big difference and helped people demonstrate that practical skill. I'm not sure if it's the same now — corporate interests seem to have coopted what used to be open technologies and exams. Recently I looked at a project management certification I did 20 years ago and they've at least quadrupled the price and made the materials harder to get hold of. Hopefully the next generation will route around this disruption! ☺️

@impactology That is true. These days I don't remember a lot of detail from my course, but I feel like it gave me enough of an outline that when I run across something new I know where it fits in the larger subject, and I know what I need to be reading around and reminding myself of to understand it fully. I changed careers and haven't used my degree professionally for over 16 years, but I still code recreationally and the way of thinking that I learned while studying still helps me now.

@impactology (Which is great! Degrees matter for subjects that warrant a degree. But there's no point putting occupations out of reach to people who would be perfectly capable in them without doing a degree. Too often a degree is just a field HR departments use to narrow down candidates.)

@impactology The irony is that something like network architect or technical architect is a *very* well-paid, senior level job that demands a high level of knowledge and skill, but that I think it's probably still possible even now to get into without a degree. Networking especially - you start off as the kid with the cables, you do the certifications, and you just keep moving up. Once you have the experience, no one is looking back to see what your degree was in.

@impactology That's not great. I've heard there are a *lot* of "universities" but that the rigour/quality of the courses can really vary, and that that is one reason the data gives the impression there are lots of "graduates" who are struggling to find work (which sounds bad) but the reality is they're not all actually qualified to the level a "graduate" typically is - depending on the institution, of course.

@impactology (That said, once you get into the really detailed stuff like technical architecture for industry-strength production systems, I don't think anyone gets everything they'd need for that from a degree. I've seen a lot of people progress into those roles from starting in networking or middleware/DBA. You have to actually work with those systems to know the professional tools and how they respond under load etc. Most of the people in the office don't know everything the architect knows.)

@impactology Yeah, I can understand your frustration with that. You do need to learn how to apply whatever you're being taught, at least to the extent that you can sit down with something like a certification guide later and pick up a specific application relatively quickly. If you're having to learn everything from scratch that kind of defeats the point of a degree.

@impactology Absolutely. The options available to you are really different at different universities, as well. The course at Warwick did much more hardware work than mine at KCL. Imperial were working on computer-generated graphics for particle systems like fire, and also some quantum computing. It's worth shopping around to find a course that fits your goals long term.

@impactology My third-year project was HCI focused, based on the idea of extending something like the Microsoft office assistant so you could maintain a consistent assistant interface across every app, using an XML specification to match the information provided to the application context. Second year project was a more practical networked client-server style system, which we divided up so each member of the group worked on a different part of it. I built the server.

@impactology Yeah, once I got into a programming-focused role I could apply quite a lot of it. I spent a year or so first in a more infrastructure-focused role assisting on big projects, which was very helpful but I didn't need to have studied that specifically at degree level to pick it up given what I did learn in my degree. After that I moved into application management and support using my Java skills on a full production system with load balancing, database layers etc. Was fine.

@impactology Might depend on the course. We did database design in the second year, and a group project that was assessed in a demonstration and with the code submitted. The rest of the assessment was paper exam based but most of the purely theoretical stuff was left until the third year and you could choose options.
