Given that you need work experience in order to get work experience nowdays all training, courses, education and especially edtech should be a high fidelity workplace simulator

We need to be clear that the current ways of assessment, focus on high stakes recall and its merit isn't the only way to cultivate and judge intelligence

People can go through years of feeling like losers because of such exams because they didn't know there were other ways of judging their competence and intellect other than memory recall.

Robert Sternberg talks about this

One thing I’ve realized about money, jobs, business, any kind of income: everything is about recognition.Every single thing.

It’s about being recognized by the right people, by the right volume of people,
at the right time.

Because first, you need to make yourself visible. Then you need to make yourself legible and by that, you make yourself recognizable and by that you create trust

If people recognize you, your service they trust your service, your product, your thinking and money follows.

Creative students in India are often forced to suppress their natural urge to ask "Why does this matter in the big picture?" because they need to focus on "What was the specific terminology used in Chapter 4?" The Norwegian system effectively removes that "Cognitive Tax," allowing the student to spend 100% of their energy on the higher-order thinking they are actually good at.

Creative minds often excel at Divergent Thinking connecting ideas from different fields.

The Norwegian format (especially the oral presentation) rewards a student who says, "This historical event reminds me of a modern-day UI design principle where user friction leads to systemic collapse."

In a rote system, that insight is seen as "off-topic" or "distraction." In Norway, that's how you get a 6 (the highest grade).

In many traditional systems, the exam is a test of lossless data compression (can you store 100 pages and retrieve them exactly?).

In Norway, the exam is a test of Systemic Synthesis (can you understand the "rules" of the game and apply them to a new scenario?).

It is a common misconception that "open-book" means "no-memory."

Because teachers know you have your notes, they will never ask a question that has a direct answer in the book.

The Book says: "The Battle of Stiklestad happened in 1030"

The Exam asks: "Argue how the religious shift at Stiklestad created the friction necessary for modern Norwegian secularism"

You cannot "find" that answer. You have to synthesize five different chapters of history, three social theories, and your own logic

In Part 2 of STEM exams or for the entirety of many Social Science exams, you are allowed to bring all your notes, textbooks, and even previous assignments.

The logic is simple: In a real job, you have the internet and books. The "exam" is seeing if you can:

Filter information effectively.

Apply formulas to a novel situation.

Communicate your reasoning clearly

Even for their essay type written exams they are provided with "Vedlegg" (attachments/sources)statistics, articles, or excerpts. You have to synthesize these with your own knowledge to build an argument.

In a Norwegian TV show on Netflix, Ragnarok, they show high school life of kids in Norway. There's a scene of how their exams are conducted, two teachers just interview you for a presentation you made on a topic you chose and researched on.

That's their high school exam, just a casual interview chat for a topic you made a ppt on.

Muntlig Eksamen (Oral Exam)The student speaks for 10–15 minutes on their researched topic (using slides, posters, or just notes)

The whole reading not for the sake of synthesis and connecting it with something else to write down on your own for solving a problem or elaborating an idea but rather reading to exactly recall the stuff as it is, super hard

Why does reading for the sake of memorization and recall feel so unnatural as a cognitive activity?

And why is it THE bedrock of assessment for most credentializing formal education systems?

@tokyo_0 Yup I'm aware it's a signalling mechanism for HR's convenience

Thankfully there is nowadays a discourse of "proof of skill" and "skill based hiring" I'm seeing on socials and even platforms based around that

https://app.skillsync.wiki

https://www.rightfit.so/

I expect that as genz starts getting hiring autonomy this skill based/portfolio project based hiring will become more mainstream

The way I see it is that its in the nature of brain to forget stuff (Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve).

No matter what you study from whatever institution on earth or self-taught, you will forget things unless you find the space and time to contextualize it via projects that can help you later retrigger it in similar contexts.

@tokyo_0 Nice, so already the projects had quite a bit of context complexity. No wonder you could retain and apply later.

Here the assignments and exams are very formulaic, there's simply nothing left for the memory to hang onto and you relearn everything about industry work from scratch

@tokyo_0 The application can only happen if there's some semblance of similarity to the work, otherwise your memory won't have anything to trigger.

Sadly the way stuff is taught and assessed in college is so irrelevant and decontextualized it fades away after doing the exam, without any application to hold and retrigger it later.

@wakame@tech.lgbt One thing I've realized, software engineering is extremely extremely different than *computer science* or whatever they teach in a 4 year cs degree

Like the number and kind of abstractions for the entire supply chain of frameworks and libraries and the way it's all run and maintained is so different than learning how to merge sort

@wakame@tech.lgbt Every time you need to tweak one line, you have to mentally walk all ten factories at once then?

If millions of lines code was visualized as a factory skid like with pipes and tubes, like an oil refinery or food processing or pharma unit let's say what would that be like

I think open source ecosystem flourished more in US, EU because of less demanding work schedule

Devs there had the energy to work on oss because working 12 hours daily wasn't the standard

The day working conditions in India improve we'll also see more genuine oss projects

Are we stuck with the same Desktop UX forever? by Scott Jenson @scottjenson | Ubuntu Summit 25.10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fZTOjd_bOQ

"Desktop UX hasn't meaningfully changed in 20 years"

"This talk focuses on that evil little term “UX/UI,” which is responsible for so much confusion and tension in open-source projects. Not only does it unnecessarily pit programmers against designers, but it also limits our vision of what we could be doing

"Growing up, I was taught about Jews’ sacred task of tikkun olam — to repair the world. It’s our responsibility as Jews to speak out against injustice and work to make the world a better place"
