@gabrielesvelto I think it also just speaks ill of the craft of coding. Most code is trash and end users are unaware of how bad it really is (they just know that everything is unreliable but not the specific why). So it's frankly easier to replace most coders. If the code is going to be shitty anyway, might as well be shitty and fast. With art, it's at least always directly scrutinized by consumers.

@minotaurs_at_work @tilton yeah, like sometimes other devs are my customer, like if I'm making an API, but what are we even doing if we're not trying to make everyone's lives better? It especially irks me to focus too much on programmers when we're often (not saying always!) paid better than most other professions. Like if I thought AI made software cheaper at the expense of revenue for the software industry, I'd be for it. Just that's not what it's doing at all.

@isaackuo @tilton probably one of the better use cases I've heard of Claude was someone using it to rewrite things that were written in some proprietary ORM DSL back into SQL. Using one shiny new thing to back out of a previous shiny new thing. I think a lot of Claude users are falling straight into the vendor lock-in trap making special tools for it instead of just making a damn script that they can run on their machine. And letting it make spaghetti code that humans can't understand.

@independentpen @cwebber I think one issue is that a lot of this really is a social science question that developers treat as only an engineering problem. I and the author of the blogpost relate to being dissatisfied even with valid outputs. It’s like someone being “correct” but not in a way that gives us any confidence their underlying model is good.

@cwebber I relate to so much of what this article is saying. A lot of the fediverse are people who haven't used AI and hate it based on assumptions and outdated experiences. Then there are those of us who use it (often because we have to) and hate it, and it's a different kind of hate. I also have noticed that it works so much better with Rust. Without guardrails, even Opus 4.6 just makes bizarre decisions. Even doing old-fashioned things (like using -1 to mean uninitialized).

@plexus yeah the boosters always cherry-pick the most emotional, irrational-sounding arguments they can find. All this time before this craze, I felt like development had shed so many of its old problems, where all the major programming languages, frameworks and even many IDEs are open source. The having people try to drag us back into the dark old world of expensive tools, subscriptions and vendor lock-in. I’m fine with neural nets as such! I’ve worked with them for over a decade.

That’s terrible that ICE is at some US airports. I’m hoping we don’t encounter any. But it was already terrible that the TSA is in all the airports. Both of these are products of the post-9/11 authoritarian creep. We could live without them as we once did.

I went to NAMM and the subsequent Friends of Buchla event last week/weekend and one thing that I think does deserve more representation there is open source tools. It would be nice if there was one booth, even a small one, that just represented the whole ecosystem. Music students and educators attend at a great discount or paid for by an institution. They're not programmers who necessarily know what's out there.
