@jonathanreed@techhub.social @BenRiceM@mastodon.social It's just a shame how the financially richest among us are also the poorest in just about every other way.
But at the end of the day, it's our own mistake as most of us keep watching/buying/engaging with it.
The whole thing just makes me sad.

Even if all the ethical issues weren't there - why exactly do we need this tv series?
There's less and less new culture, new stories to be told. New perspectives to be seen. It's impoverishing us all.

@BenRiceM@mastodon.social There's also the issue that so many people just do not want to acknowledge exactly how harmful she is.
They treat her as an author with maybe some poor opinions rather than someone who made it her life's mission to eradicate trans people from society and uses her millions of £ and millions of followers to make this happen every single day - with infuriating success.

@nini@oldbytes.space @RosannaSibora@fosstodon.org Well, sort of. At the end of the day in democracies, even when they don't function optimally, we still choose our leaders and somehow most of us keep picking people who won't act in our best interest.
There's of course a much larger story here in degraded public knowledge, education, normalcy bias, decreased standards of living that make us pick other priorities and whatever else.
But the people in general are not without blame. And if a product wasn't adopted voluntarily by the public at large as well things would look different. It might not fully disappear but it would be less central in our lives. Much as we may hate AI, millions of people use it on the daily.

@RosannaSibora@fosstodon.org I just don't understand how this is the gazillionth example of something that's forced into the world, we all know it's bad for us, our leaders know it too, and yet...
Honestly, wtf are we doing?

@limebar@mastodon.social May I add good old Wikipedia/Wikimedia to the mix?
There are so many images, video, sounds and music to be found there as well. Most of it can be freely used (either public domain or cc).
Another resource I have used extensively for people willing to put some effort into their sounds/music is Freesound. I've built entire 20min soundscapes with their freely available sounds which are community contributed.
https://freesound.org
There's also the Noun Project for a gazillion kinds of icons (free if you provide credit).

Music Time!

One of the samples that brings me a lot of joy in all its versions.
Perfect for a (too) hot day.
Let’s do some pop; disco; funk; bollywood; hip hop; dance and afrobeat across Europe; North America; Asia and Africa.
This sample travelled through styles and across the world.
These are the ones I could hunt down, my guess is there may be more.

@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu You're welcome. I just hope you realise it was partially backhanded - both the Commission and Parliament have a habit of using memes that come straight from US media and culture.
I can't describe it otherwise than absolute insanity for our EUROPEAN institutions to do this. We need to celebrate European culture, encourage it even.
(also plenty of other issues with the Commission but this is not the place)

@tante@tldr.nettime.org Am I alone in also feeling a profound sadness over all of this?
Yes, I'm angry over wasteful spending. Worried about the environmental impact. Scared for the loss of our humanity. Infuriated to be told my words are AI (they never are). Exhausted of the constant copying of the US despite...
But mostly - I am genuinely just really sad.

What a world not to want to live in.

@mynameistillian@plush.city As a queer European it's hard to count the number of times I've had issues with/attacks by/denial of rights by lily white 'christian' Europeans, whereas with non-white folk I've rarely had an incident and frequently found kinship.
I hate how our community is (ab)used as an arrow against other minorities or the perpetual assumption that there's no overlap.

@Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt It angers me to no end that somehow everyone knows better than the people with lived experience, the professionals working with the community and the decades of medical and scientific research into gender and sex. This is such a manufactured issue, and it's horrible either way but that the UK and Europe are adopting it right from the US... but of course.
