I teach, so trying to adjust old ppts for lecture got a little weird because it turned the bulletpoints into mailboxes, and equation formulas are done completely differently so libre just makes them uneditable (a picture?). When things got wonky in lecture though I managed just fine. My students are much worse, they open shit in non-MS apps all the time (.notes for takehome exams, or like, keynote, whatever) and fuck up formatting all the time, often without even realizing it. (I do provide PDF alternatives at least). Explaining I use libre really easy in that case, lol.

Agreed, and a good literature review will dig up that chain. Although it won’t ever be perfectly accurate since the point is paraphrasing the literature to build a structure around what you’re doing, that doesn’t mean your secondary source understood the original (and their reviewers, who can very much be hit or miss). And don’t get me started on authors misunderstanding quantitative data, haha. I haven’t been doing much academic research since my kids were born, but the number of “they made that shit up” cases were wild in education research. Like arbitrary spline models, misused propensity score matching, a SEM model with cherry picked factors, you name it. … And this comment chain is way next level for this community. Hahaha

Actually, are you sure a meta analysis isn’t a primary source? Having worked on one in the past, you’re often having to reanalyze data and the finished product is quite unique. Even “structured literature reviews” I think count as primary sources, since the author adds to the literature their own perspective and they are generally peer reviewed. That said, when you cite things professionally, you will often have hundreds of sources. Most researchers, legal scholars, etc., just keep a database of their citations for easy callback. It’s important because at the upper levels, different authors might speak of the same objective findings in two different ways and with two different frameworks, so the aggregate loses that. It’s not something non-professionals necessarily need to care about, but you do want to train undergraduates on that proper methods so they’re ready if and when they go to graduate school.

Honestly I think it comes from a misunderstanding regarding secondary sources vs primary ones. Wikipedia, as well as encyclopedias and textbooks, are secondary sources. It’s not good practice to cite secondary sources without primary ones, but a lot of people (namely, teachers) don’t grasp why which leads these sources to get classified as bad. That, plus Wikipedia is accessible without the usual gatekeeping and money behind what textbooks and encyclopedias have, which adds to the sources “credibility.” Money means marketing, including constant email campaigns targeting people like me trying to validate whatever textbook they’re peddling. (And in case you wonder if they’re evil, they sometimes offer kickbacks to adopt their expensive textbooks for my university classes). Fedi users already get that, though, as that’s a common problem FOSS usually has. Point is, wiki lives in a weird place because no, you shouldn’t cite it just like you shouldn’t cite textbooks, but yes, it’s perfectly valid so long as you check those sources. And, speaking from experience, some students really don’t understand as I see citations for so much worse.

Fun article, except I think there’s a lot of other factors like the type of seat, hi vs low flow, and which surfaces you’re talking about. If it mitigates getting shit on the sink counter / toothbrushes, but not the floor, that sounds like a win. And yes, always use proper cleaners… what madman cleans a toilet with just water?

Bizarrely it’s probably more eco friendly than not having the tradition since those tree farms probably wouldn’t exist otherwise. It’s not like the meat industry, it’s probably net positive on emissions. Though, it would be better if we just reduced urban sprawl and deforestation of natural forests, etc., but that’s how it goes I guess.

Fun unsolicited social psych lesson: in terms of persuasion, spontaneous messaging is catchier but thoughtful messaging is more likely to have a stronger long term impact. Often best to use both. It’s not always the same level as debate, but the idea is there. Why buy? It’s got safety standards. It builds strong bones. It’s good for the environment. Good? Ok now here’s emotional music and a celebrity you like. Research shows spontaneous messaging without the cognitive side isn’t going to sway attitudes in a meaningful way, although the latter might be needed to get attention (and most won’t work if someone is already decided, then you really do need debate lol). That said, I’m pretty sure the average ad is just trying to keep a brand in public consciousness, since that’s taught in marketing programs. Some research on associative learning might support that but I think it’s weak at best.

When I was younger and was just freshly moved out, I used BNPL 0% interest a lot (iirc it was Newegg, was like 15 years ago). It was kind of necessary to get a computer and I had just got an RA contract that paid stipends monthly, guaranteed for 5 years. If you already have money and can get 0% interest, you can reinvest that cash as long as you can guarantee a payoff (set reminders!). You can put that $2,000 in a CD for that exact amount of time, too, and earn yourself back 3%-4%. That said, they might have caught onto my grift cause they usually offer 5% back OR 0% interest, lol.
