Núna er komið í héraðsfréttamiðlana þarna suðurfrá að líklegasti sökudólgurinn í þessu máli sé [eins og oft áður] af tegundinni "Oligoryzomys longicaudatus", sem mætti víst þýða sem "Breiðhalamús". En kannski er þarna einhver pólitík á sveimi; Argentínumönnum þætti þessi niðurstaða henta betur, því breiðhalamýs eru algengari í Chile, sem hollensku hjónin heimsóttu jú líka. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oligoryzomys_longicaudatus

Líklegast þykir að hollenska parið sem lést úr Andes-hantavírusnum hafi smitast á fuglaskoðunarrúnti í Ushuaia, þar sem þau gengu ofan á nýlegri landfyllingu á fyrrverandi öskuhaugum - kjöraðstæðum fyrir rottur og fleira í þeim dúr. En þetta verður mögulega staðfest þegar Argentínska smitrannsóknafólkið kemst á staðinn - þau sem samsæriskenningamaðurinn Milei var ekki búinn að láta reka. 😖

Ætli maður í gönguferðir í Chile og Argentínu, þá ætti maður fljótlega að rekast á sífelldar aðvaranir vegna Hanta-vírusa; ekki reka nefið inn í kofa, holur eða hella án þess fyrst að lofta vel út. Algengasta smitið er af þurrum nagdýraskít, vírusinn þolir illa sólarljós. Bein smit, t.d. með biti eru aftur sjaldgæf.
Afbrigðið sem nú er í fréttum kalla Patagóníumenn Andes-vírus og virðist vera það eina sem getur smitast beint á milli manna. Það er útbreiddast upp til fjalla og syðst í álfunni.

@mo@icelandphotos.co.uk @FourT4@mastodonapp.uk Just to put things in context: the Öræfi area was a real backwater until 1967, when they finally got linked to the road system (eastwards), followed by the bridges on Skeiðarársandur to the west in 1974. Yet they were quite early building electricity-generators, subscribed to various technical manuals and made fairly technical tools from what they called "strand-goods". Still we can see that two of the sisters have the same name, maybe people didn't expect both to live for long.

He was a well known craftsman; building houses, furniture and even the church organ, which he made using wreckage from stranded ships. Yet they had time for other stuff; the last farmers at Kvísker are the most famous autodidactes in the country - four brothers where one wrote peer-reviewed articles on insects, birds and flora, one was a local historian, one was an inventor, and one was a reference in glaciology. But of course it was their sister who ran the practical side of the household. None of them ever did marry.

@FourT4@mastodonapp.uk @mo@icelandphotos.co.uk Once again the historical perspective skews the picture: when I look at it, I'm thinking "Where in hell would I now pass over the glacier-tongue with a group of sheep?" Because the farmers at Kvísker used to do exactly that, to get their sheep to/from the mountain Breiðamerkurfjall just to the right of the frame. Breiðamerkurfjall used to be totally surrounded by ice until the 1950-60, at which point the farmers built a cable-bridge up further north.

@kipuka@social.sciences.re Vraiment curieux; sais-tu si c'est du lave trés acide, genre rhyolite? [* en Islandais «dos de baleine» est réservé pour les formations rocheuses dont les glaciers en passage ont poli le haut, pense que le terme français «Roche moutonnée» est utilisé un peu partout.]

@FlohEinstein@chaos.social The Faeroese use the word "vitlíki" for AI, composed of "vit" = knowledge and "líki" = similar to or a substitute of. In Icelandic "smjörlíki" = margarine and "bjórlíki" was a dreadful mixture supposed to imitate beer, so the "líki" part has plenty of negative/diminutive resonance. Thus "vitlíki" is something that tries to imitate proper intelligence, but falls short of its goal.

@benroyce @jon @Vivaldi In Iceland it depends on the distributor how easy it is to get the certificates of origin for your current, some make it a [volontarily] very convoluted process - and more expensive. Actually, you can't even prove that the energy is always 100% green, some fisheries in the Eastern and Western fjords do need to use fossil fuels during spike-activity in late winter (capelin-season, mackerel).

@Dolphinchaz @mo Apparently the term "tussock" is used by sci-fi nerds to designate particular alien lifeforms - in this part of Iceland, all these marshy expanses form endless tussocks via the great number of passages through 0 ℃ temperature; alternating frost and thaw extremely often. We used to be able to recognize people from the area because they'd developed a special style of walk, called "þúfnagöngulag" - should be called "tussock-gait"... 😜

@pozorvlak @vwbusguy @Natasha_Jay In Icelandic we have "Páskar" which is the same word, but until recently (meaning a couple of centuries) it was often preceded with something related to "spring" because there was another period of festivities celebrating the rise of the sun - that one was called "Vetrarpáskar" or the "winter-easter". Christmas was just one of the masses occurring at the winter-easter period, more commonly called "Jól", and plenty of other saints had their mass in that period.

@kipuka@social.sciences.re Une légende urbaine: Un an après la fin de l'éruption de Surtsey, un groupe de chercheurs a découvert la première véritable plante sur l’île. Les botanistes un peu perplexes, n'arrivait pas a distinguer de quel plante il s'agissait. La femme d'un des chercheurs (en charge de la bouffe) regardait d'un clin d’œil et affirmait que c'était du tomate. Les autres protestaient fortement, jusqu'au moment ou on a trouve du PQ sous le rocher á côte. Le suspect principal était bien sur un géologue!

@jon @Vivaldi You must then make sure that your energy suppliers don't sell you electricity with certificates of provenance from coal, oil or nuclear, right? Because the Icelandic producers/distributors have been selling such green absolution-certificates to European markets, instead we get those 'dirty' stamps on our energy. Personally I pay ~1.65 ISK extra per kWh just to keep my electricity green, denying the joy of gambling to those suits... 🥴
