The shower can be such an overwhelming place for people with sensory issues, such as autistic folks. Remember! You're allowed to make it a better sensory experience. You can add music, incense, or a galaxy projector. You are allowed to turn the lights off, reduce water pressure, or use a shower chair

If you only do everything you "should" do, you will never have time for anything else… and you probably won't even finish everything you "should" do. It's just not possible. So why feel guilty for not finishing all of the things you (and others) tell yourself you should do?

It's not childish to adapt child-focused ADHD strategies to work for you as an adult. Visual schedules, sticker charts, token economies, and other strategies get talked about as if they are only for kids, when they could help so many adults as well

Anything worth doing is worth half-assing. I promise. Seriously, if doing something perfectly is going to improve your life or functioning, half-assing it is still going to improve your life or functioning 9 times out of 10

Having a flaky working memory, as ADHD'ers do, means we NEED to do something to externalize that.

This could be the much maligned advice to "write it down," but it could be visual cues in our environment, or practising memory techniques.

However, you also have to be willing to forget things sometimes.

If we don't purge tasks/notes from our memory systems, it's going to eventually become overwhelming. This is true whether that system is writing things down, visual cues, or "I'll remember it"

Decision paralysis can actually be a major contributor to impulsivity for ADHD'ers.

A lot of energy and stress can build up behind this decision when we get stuck on a decions, and this can suddenly give way to a big, bold, or exciting move, smashing through paralysis with the power of impulsivity

It can also make us really confused when things unexpectedly change because our thinking can adapt super quickly and we need time to re-process These struggles with cognitive flexibility impact decisionmaking in both of these ways. We can get lost choosing between extreme options, sometimes not even seeing the moderate options in between. AND if there's an unexpected change, such as a price change, we can freeze entirely as we reprocess

Cognitive flexibility, or the ability to adapt our thinking as circumstances change, is so important to decisionmaking.

Unfortunately, this means that folks who struggle with cognitive flexibility [such as ADHD, autistic, many other neurodivergent folks] can really struggle here

Struggling with cognitive flexibility often means getting stuck in black-and-white patterns of thinking, where we see things in all-or-nothing terms.

Habits are triggered by environmental cues, either internal or external.

Willpower, especially for ADHD'ers, isn't a sustainable cue!

To give our habits the best chance to stick, we need to use cues that are consistent, sustainable, and relevant to us or we don't stand a chance

For ADHD'ers, future plans often need a sense of urgency to to feel real to us. This sets us up for an all-or-nothing approach to events, where we feel we have to do everything right this moment or it will never happen.

This tricks us into so many unsustainable behaviours, it's not even funny

@murdoc This would work with anyone in the mix, but, to be honest, it's easier to co-regulate with someone who has similar regulation needs as us and people who we can communicate with more easily. So, I'd expect it would be easier with other people with a similar neurotype to us

Ultimately, Co-regulations offers a framework for us to support those we care about, and then when they support us and are vulnerable in response, this only further reinforces our bonds and supports our sense of community.

To co-regulate, then, we must be willing to share this vulnerability with others, and this shared vulnerability is essential to forging and strengthening relationships. Being vulnerable in a way that is consensual, respected, understood, and safe strengthens friendships and builds community

This group progress, sense of connection our skills and the larger outcome, and feeling supported by others are all factors important to community building. Co-regulation however, is an especially good way to build community, in my opinion, because of the shared vulnerability involved. Self-regulation requires us to admit our vulnerability, and to adequately self-regulate, we need to understand that our thoughts, feelings, behaviours and sensations have the ability to throw us into crisis

The fact that co-regulation is inherently collaborative and goal-oriented makes it a great option for community building. In fact, ANY ACTIVITY where we work collaboratively with others towards a shared goal or mission provides a great opportunity to build community. This is because these shared goal-oriented activities allow us to see our skills contribute to an outcome we value in a way larger than we could affect alone.

This is self-regulation, constantly adjusting our approach to thoughts, feelings, sensations, and behaviour to continue moving forward and away from crisis. Co-regulation, then, is self-regulating collaboratively with a crew. This could be with one person leading it from the outside, such as a parent or therapist facilitating a regulation activity, or it could a group working together to regulate each other. Essentially, co-regulation is body doubling, but for regulation

If an analogy helps, imagine sailing a boat through a narrow channel. The boat is being influenced by the waves, wind, currents, other boat traffic etc., similar to how we are influenced by our thoughts, feelings, sensations, and behaviour, as well as those of others Running the boat aground on either side would be a crisis and prevent us from accomplishing our goals, and to avoid crisis we constantly adjust to stay between the shores.

At it's most basic, self-regulation is using cognitive, emotional, behavioural, or sensory strategies to change our behaviour, prevent distress, and work towards our goals. Self-regulation isn't about shutting down our emotions, thoughts, or behaviours; It's about steering them so that we can continue to function and avoid crashing out

Self-regulation doesn't always have to happen alone.

In fact, I think that regulation can be a great way to build community and tangibly support people that you care about.

So, let's dive into doing that and talk about co-regulation (🧵)

A major accommodation that autistic and ADHD people can give themselves is reducing the number of decisions we need to make.

This could look like is automating decisions, relying on random chance, or drafting standard operating procedures for ourselves, such routines or checklists

This is because decision making is a core executive function, requiring energy, concentration, working memory, and cognitive processing.

Having barriers to any of these makes decision making much more taxing. Guess who has barriers for all of them?

Normalization of different ways of thinking. Normalization of divergent learning styles. Normalization of accommodations and treatment

The issue is seeing these signs, and actually trusting yourself enough to stop when you see them. That's what helps us avoid crisis
