DSM support needs criteria *only* includes social communication and restricted, repetitive behaviors. There are a non-trivial amount of undiagnosed or self-diagnosed autistic people who meet the criteria for "medium support needs". There are a non-trivial amount of "low support needs" diagnosed people who have higher actual support needs than some "medium support needs" people. #autism

You do not know if a stranger on the internet is low support needs. Not every diagnosis includes a support needs level. Psychologists are not very accurate with diagnosis, but are very sexist with diagnosis. The DSM criteria for "support needs" only represent very stereotypical, externally visible traits and comorbidities. #autism

Is there a consensus about if #DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) is more/less likely to be effective/harmful among #actuallyautistic populations than generally? I've heard nothing but good things in the context of BPD, but given the massive misdiagnosis rate among autistic women I'm curious how much of that might be accidentally helping with autism-related stuff.

@nyhan@fediscience.org I really see this as a weakness of EBM. At least as it is practiced by public health. EBM was used to justify ignoring the lab experiments (and unique case studies that form natural experiments) that all but proved airborne transmission in March of 2020, in favour of inconclusive meta analysis of regression models. Doctors pointing to a hierarchy of evidence that works great for biology, but completely fails at comprehending physics and chemistry.

@DoctorDeathray@retro.social So instead of 3D printing the case, maybe you'll probably need to craft it. Can you sew? Are you decent with a Dremel? There's a million ways to make the case, but that's going to also impact the overall design quite a bit.

@DoctorDeathray@retro.social As somebody who's failed at this a few times, the hardest part is also the thing that makes it a cyberdeck: building and designing the case. I would put a bit of thought into a maybe a USB hub and a battery pack and a charging setup that makes you happy. But the case is 90% of the challenge and the software side really doesn't matter.

It's not hard to imagine that Oprah Winfrey has ruined tens of thousands of people's lives in a way that's pretty difficult to pretend it wasn't intentional. Not just Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz and A Million Little Pieces. Oprah was actively promoting Satanic Panic conspiracy theories in 1989. She literally had Michelle Smith on her show a decade after Michelle Remembers was published. Just unspeakable levels of evil that is basically impossible to explain to anybody.

Genuinely think that basic consumer protection laws should essentially ban subcontractors.

If I am buying a service from a company and that service is not provided by somebody on that company's payroll, then they're pretty blatantly just ripping me off.

A thing that sucks about trans day of visibility is that it's very often not safe for trans people to be visible.

This year more than most in the recent past.

I think if you're a cis ally, this is a year where it's probably especially important to be visible as a strong ally.

Be visible in your support for trans rights, and your opposition to bigotry.

This whole thing is a bit of a subpost. There's a bit of a meme on fedi, where people feel the need to tell queer and autistic people to shut up, because... Well, because of bigotry. But I think bigotry that involves them not understanding how fragile the lives of queer and autistic people are. Bigotry that involves not really understanding that there is a large, exterminationist movement that wants us to not exist. An exterminationist movement that has almost uniquely been able to implement policies that have fairly broad political support. And how those policies involve actually trying to make us not exist. That movement is at the root of (almost) all other exterminationist movements.

I don't really have faith that there will ever be meaningful legal protections for queer or autistic people. We let parents torture their children for arbitrary reasons. The rights of queer and disabled people have always been third tier rights, especially when the people oppressing us claim to have religious motivations to do so. We should still try to do better, but things are bad.

Autistic people are still subject to conversion therapy, everywhere. Canada (and some other places) have banned conversion therapy for some queer people, but enforcement of these bans is effectively non-existent. In practice, there are no protections against the medicalized torture of queer or autistic children.

Autistic people and queer people are the only groups who risk facing the torture of conversion therapy.

ABA and Conversion Therapy are literally the same thing, and were invented by the same person.

It occurs to me that the main connection between autism advocacy and queer advocacy is probably going to be missed by most people.
