Amtrak is not bad at all for short trips. For a longer journey, forget about it. Try looking at travel from Boston to anywhere south of DC.

Décentralisation is just how it's structured, it has nothing to do with privacy. Email itself is decentralised. I would recommend using a service like duckduckgo which lets you generate @duck.com email addresses for anonymous signups

OSMand is what got me off Maps. It's one of the few apps I pay monthly to support. It does a ton of stuff Maps cannot and never will do, like local trip recording, customizable everything and displaying OBDII data.

If you ever have chilly spring/fall mornings, you can often find one perched on a flower “sleeping in”. (Really their metabolisms just slow way down in the cold, and they’re waiting for the sun to hit.) You can get some tiny pets in for sure. be gentle though, they’re just little guys

Does anyone remember those SD cards that had wifi broadcasting capabilities for transferring content off of a dumb device? This was like 15 years ago. Seems they’re not available anymore.

I see the debate happening in here, and I honestly think the way this really works is a lot weirder and at a bigger scale than what most of us might imagine. We've had pretty strong machine learning for quite a while... we still don't know exactly how it works, but these models have reasoning, pattern recognition and the ability to classify data which improves every day. The likes of Google ingest all manner of disparate data points, buying and selling them to each other, responding to the push and pull of markets and trends. These players have a realtime profile on every single person who touches their platform. Users touch that platform with almost everything they do. These touch points where data get gathered are not just users' own personal devices, either. They increasingly happen via corporate and state-controlled devices and networks out in the built environment. We feed these entities continuously with our actions, whether we know it or not. They continuously map all the intersections of millions of data points across billions of profiles, theoretically getting as granular as needed. It's picking up patterns that humans would never think to look for, modulating, and feeding it back to us. Generative agents fit into this framework, hand in glove. At this scale, these entities can derive trends, interests, motivations. They create massive feedback loops, *driving* trends that suit them as they observe, predict and influence what we'll do, wear, buy, eat. Where we go online, and IRL. And what we search for. This is a massive, largely invisible, endlessly adaptable machine they've created. No one person can fathom the entirety of it. Even for the engineers who contribute, they only know their one small piece, and they may be unaware of how it contributes to the whole or how it ultimately is used. The only ceiling to it is data storage, compute, and access/adoption. They're obviously working to massively raise that on all fronts. This is becoming the mycelium beneath our forest floor. Like trees, we find it convenient and practical to know each other's statuses and whereabouts, to converse, and to get things. We eat from it, or it feeds us. Meanwhile, it shapes the environment itself, deciding who rises and falls, spreading, terraforming the earth and transforming the substrate of above-ground life according to its own alien logic. Unlike a mycelial network, it has our own hubris reflected and embodied. It's not self-limiting, not in a way that means anything to the well-being of most of us. The end result here won't exactly be balance and homeostasis in the ecosystem. They don't need our microphones.

Yep, I've noticed a very common idea around relaxation/meditation, physical exercise as well, is that "I'm just not good at that. I've tried 'everything' and it's just not for me". Well, I can tell you that they haven't tried everything, not even close, but there is this idea out there that there is only one correct way to do everything. Or the opposite problem - we understand that there are infinite valid ways and suffer from decision fatigue. Even with meditation in completely silent darkness, you are taught to feel your body, focus on the spot where you're touching your chair, where your feet touch the ground, feel your breath rise and fall, etc. You're literally just noticing things, and then letting them pass, that's all it is. Physical sensations, thoughts, emotions, sensory input. A thought comes up, allow it to float away. Then do the same with the next one. Of course it's hard at first. You will probably "fail" the first time, or the first hundred. Just like literally everything else, it becomes less hard. But every human brain is capable of this, if not primed for it. Eventually there will be an empty space between each "thing", and that space will get larger and larger. Then you realize the "space" itself also has some perceivable quality - it's not just nothingness. And so on and so forth. That's when it starts to get fun. Despite what some self-described "gurus" might claim, you can do meditation anywhere, anytime. Some people find it helpful to be moving. I like to do it while walking.

I honestly don’t even think the lawmakers thought this far, after reading the bill myself. I’m cautiously optimistic that this will end up in the courts, hopefully dying there.

Yep, and good luck figuring out who the “os provider” even is at that point. Maybe I’m misunderstanding, (and ianal) but the language in the bill is incredibly loose. I would not be surprised if this thing gets poked full of holes, and I’m not even that creative.

With a FOSS OS, the local systems administrator would be considered the OS provider Would they though? I only skimmed the bill text, but I think it might be hard to determine who is the “OS provider”, who is the “store” and who the “developers” are in the case of FOSS. It doesn’t require a numerical age but rather an “age bracket” that the user provides during setup (<13, 13-16, 16-18, 18+) which must be “made available” to the “store” and the store must have a mechanism for picking up that “age signal” (lol). Maybe I’m misunderstanding, (and ianal) but the language seems incredibly loose. I would not be surprised if this thing gets poked full of holes and worked around (if it doesn’t end up being tied up in court first.) It would be hilarious if distros could just provide age bracketed ISO downloads for the under 18 brackets and say that the download of an ISO is part of the setup.

Yeah I'd imagine you'd have trouble finding a good deal there. I've had way more luck getting drives from eBay, thrift shops, yard sales and the local dump. Also by convincing everyone I know to just give me their old stuff that they think is no longer useful. They don't want it taking up space anyway, and I get to harvest the useful bits and add them to my frankensteined home lab, then responsibly dispose of the rest. There have also been several machines I've acquired this way that I've repaired/made whole again, then provided to those who need them.

Buy used ETA: and prevent waste I meant from individuals, not corporations with a profitable refurbishing outfit. e.g.: eBay, thrift shops, the swap shop at your local dump (if you're lucky to have one), yard sales, etc. One of my favorite things in life is rescuing hardware from the landfill, or bringing a relative's dusty old machine back to life. There are still loads of people out there who have never opened a PC case before, and think the whole machine is a loss just because it won't boot, or is "old".

That makes me really sad. Our town dump has a pay-to-dispose system for electronics like that. It’s $15 for anything from laptops and monitors, to ancient hulking mainframes, industrial equipment, stage lighting, you name it. The disposal container always had a “no scavenging” sign that I would ignore, and I’ve found some pretty sweet loot in there. Stuff like whole gaming PCs whose only problem is a single bad component, vintage analog turntables I’ve cleaned up and repaired, etc. recently the shipping container where the items are placed has been moved under a camera and a sticker system was implemented. I’m starting to think they might be profiting on both ends from it (the disposal fee from residents and money from a recycler/salvage maybe?) but I’m not quite sure. Or they’re just overly worried about liability from someone doing something dumb or unexpected, and getting someone hurt. The camera only sees who’s going in and out of the container though, not what happens inside there. My latest strategy to defeat these measures has been buying a sticker to gain access but bringing 2 pieces of unwanted junk, back my car up to partially block the view, then find something good in there and do a sneaky sticker swap onto my “decoy” item. I assume they check and count stickers sold vs. actual items stickered, but they can’t feasibly keep track of what things are or who brought what. Plus they’re understaffed, usually just 2 or 3 overworked guys handling everything for a town of 40,000, who are usually doing something useful besides sitting and watching the cameras. I also get the vibe they’re just happy to be making any money at all for the town, and don’t necessarily care unless something bad happens. It’s slightly unethical, sure, and I might get caught doing this eventually, but I don’t really care, and am willing to play dumb, act sorry, and take whatever minor slap on the wrist would be entailed with that. In my mind I’m not doing any harm, since they end up with the same net number of items in the end, plus I’m rescuing something and extending its useful life.

This is the way. I honestly don’t care how the execs think about ai or if they use it themselves, but don’t force its usage on me. I’ve been touching computers since before some of them existed. For me it’s just one extra tool that gets pulled out in very specific scenarios and used for a short amount of time. It’s like the electric start on my snowblower - you don’t technically need it, and it won’t do the work for you, (so don’t expect it to) but at the right time it’s extremely nice to have.

I’m with you there, but Google is quote rapidly falling off for me. thinking about moving away from all of Google, rolling my own solution and self-hosting (really the only free open path available currently where you’re in control) seems like it would be worse than quitting hard opiates or something. I know all the benefits of switching and even the tech part of what I would do at a high level, I’m just lazy.

I heard they’re coming out with a new one that does have seeds but they’re all non-natives selected for maximum ecological impact.
