RE: https://social.tchncs.de/@drmabuese/117058649766512838 “Previously, you had to spend human time each time you wasted another person's time. Maybe less time, like a couple of minutes to draft and send a letter versus a couple of days for the recipient to deal with it. Still, it used to put an upper bound on each organisation's time-wasting potential. There’s no longer such a bound: the marginal cost of wasting an hour of human life is zero.” I feel this.

No, it's not “better in the app”.

@jitterted@sfba.social Depends on the target audience, I'd say. I definitely prefer goal-then-method, but there are situations where it's better to have the action first, e.g., in a playbook meant to be executed in a more or less dumb fashion. Also, if the description of the goal is long, you might want to mention it briefly, then show the method, and only then launch into the full description. Otherwise, readers might think, “Yes, this is what I want, but WTF do I actually do?”

@boffbowsh@mastodon.me.uk @neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk I recently heard a comedian (Mario Barth) exhort people, especially youths, to do more dumb stuff. This is probably not what he was thinking about, but I'm sure he would approve.

@jakobmiksch And, yes, she was not popular with the cashiers, and she got searched extra diligently each time she bought something, even after she quit that job. So if you want to alienate your whole team, this would be a good way to do it.

@jakobmiksch My wife has worked as a supermarket test buyer. This means you go shopping and try to sneak as much stuff as possible past the cashier to test if they catch it (hide things in the corners, put expensive wine in a carton of the cheap stuff and so on). So yes, the concept exists. I haven't applied it to pull requests, though.

@hazelweakly The only thing I care about in a keyboard (well, almost) is the number and location of the keys. Everything else can be remapped. I really miss the key on the lower left on my ANSI Kinesis Freestyle 2, and the backslash key is too far away for my right pinky. Unfortunately, they don't have an ISO version.

@ez@chaos.social Oooh, yes, I can relate. Bonus points if someone complains afterwards that the meeting was too rushed (if you kept to the time table) or dragged on too long (if you stretched it out to compensate for the slow start).

@ericwastl@hachyderm.io I love Advent of Code. Thank you so much for preparing so many wonderful puzzles every year! With a wife and two kids, it was a struggle to find the time to just solve the puzzles, especially as Christmas drew near. I'm certain creating them is much more work. So I can totally understand the decision to reduce the volume. As to the global leaderboard, I never looked at it for exactly the reasons you mention in the FAQ. So, thanks again , and I'm looking forward to this year's edition!

@devnull @j4yc33 @david_chisnall @Em0nM4stodon In my experience (having worked on a few GDPR-compliant systems in Germany), the backup issue is usually dealt with by having a reasonable retention policy. GDPR does not require you to delete instantly. You document that you keep backups only for as long as needed, say, 3 months (and are able to demonstrate this during an audit if asked). This ensures that the data will be gone after a fixed maximum amount of time. Same for logs. You still have to ensure that you do not resurrect the data in production systems in cases where the backup is actually used, though. (Filter it out some way.)

@cy @Patricia@social.vivaldi.net Everyone is at least partially the product of their environment. This sounds like an environment that forces greatness out of programmers. Unfortunately, the result is still bad programmers, even if it's not their fault.
