Big thanks to @famirafonts@typo.social for offering up the idea behind this extension and sponsoring its (open) development!
Type designers: How do you think an automated font identification system (a la WhatTheFont, WhatFontIs) could ethically (and hopefully effectively and broadly) be rolled out for indie fonts? What's the comfort level? I don't think font files would need to be stored. I think images could be generated from trial fonts. Feel free to reply with stipulations or thoughts.
How does WhatTheFont work, and can we deploy something like it across all independent foundries’ work, not just Monotype-adjacent fonts? I suspect it'd be great for indie sales, but I wonder how many clickthrough sales on MyFonts actually come from WTF. I feel like I've posted this before, but here goes again.
@kentlew Thanks! We looked at all the possibilities and opted for the gap. In short:
- No width or scale changes mid-wordmark.
- No need for various alignments / versions of the wordmark for different applications.
- Seemed more intentional to use the letters as they lay as opposed to manipulating them too much. That said, we did go in and make micro width adjustments to glyphs that were in the second line but not first (e.g. the Ms are slightly wider than those of Fairmount Serif proper)
New work! I recently collaborated with Gretel on the core custom type family, and badge lettering, for Philadelphia Art Museum (fka Philadelphia Museum of Art)

Designspace Manager helps you link designspaces to your UFO. It adds a button to your font’s toolbar with designspace files linked to your UFO. You can add as many as you like.
What’s the point? Well, right now, you can go and double-click a linked designspace to quickly open it in Designspace Editor. But hopefully this extension’s utility will increase over time, as more extensions search for associated designspace files with the public.designspaces lib key.
