@justvanrossum Voted for the second option because I know what’s meant, but it always gives me pause unless used in the phrase “final production names.” I wonder if the designspace convention of “design” and “user” would be helpful here.

New extension on Mechanic: Kernparison
Compare kerning across all sources of your designspace as you kern in MM. Read more here: https://github.com/ryanbugden/Kernparison

Big thanks to @famirafonts@typo.social for offering up the idea behind this extension and sponsoring its (open) development!

@Okay As wide-reaching as possible would be great, but would Monotype opt in when they have WhatTheFont?

@Okay Yeah I feel you. On one hand, I don’t like the idea of an opt-out, but on the other hand it almost feels useless to build something that would require manual buy-in from all foundries. It’s already limiting that it wouldn’t include Monotype fonts—it should feature ideally every indie font.

Type designers: How do you think an automated font identification system (a la WhatTheFont, WhatFontIs) could ethically (and hopefully effectively and broadly) be rolled out for indie fonts? What's the comfort level? I don't think font files would need to be stored. I think images could be generated from trial fonts. Feel free to reply with stipulations or thoughts.

How does WhatTheFont work, and can we deploy something like it across all independent foundries’ work, not just Monotype-adjacent fonts? I suspect it'd be great for indie sales, but I wonder how many clickthrough sales on MyFonts actually come from WTF. I feel like I've posted this before, but here goes again.

@kentlew Thanks! We looked at all the possibilities and opted for the gap. In short:

  • No width or scale changes mid-wordmark.
  • No need for various alignments / versions of the wordmark for different applications.
  • Seemed more intentional to use the letters as they lay as opposed to manipulating them too much. That said, we did go in and make micro width adjustments to glyphs that were in the second line but not first (e.g. the Ms are slightly wider than those of Fairmount Serif proper)

Side note: I just opened a GitHub sponsorship. However, everything I have made thus far is intentionally free, and sponsorship is not at all expected. But it's there if you'd like to show me that people use this stuff (you can also just tell me). P.S. I forbid anyone I already sponsor or any fellow tool-builders from sponsoring me :) https://github.com/sponsors/ryanbugden

Designspace Manager helps you link designspaces to your UFO. It adds a button to your font’s toolbar with designspace files linked to your UFO. You can add as many as you like.

What’s the point? Well, right now, you can go and double-click a linked designspace to quickly open it in Designspace Editor. But hopefully this extension’s utility will increase over time, as more extensions search for associated designspace files with the public.designspaces lib key.

Tracker is a simple tool that allows you to change the internal "tracking" of your UFO—on all or some of your glyphs—from the comfort of your Space Center. Preview it and apply. Worried about scaled and rotated components shifting? It’s taken care of. https://github.com/ryanbugden/Tracker

Architect shows dynamic guidelines to help you draw type that is meant to be set on an arc. This was indispensable for me on 3 recent projects where I happened to have to draw type around a circle. https://github.com/ryanbugden/Architect

New extension on RoboFont Mechanic
⚓ Anchor Dropper ⚓

- Set up one or more typical and reusable anchor-adding workflows for getting a solid headstart on anchor placement. Based around your font’s dimensions.
- Import/export extension prefs for use later on a per-project basis. Even get your setup started from a glyphConstruction file.
- Bulk remove anchors by name, remove duplicates.
