I'm interested in economics, politics, nature, democracy and literature. On a scale from one to reply guy, I'm definitely not a zero, but I try not to. I will not be offended if you mute me. Toots deleted after two weeks.

@bri7@social.treehouse.systems Assuming $1 trillion in spending in 2026, and 270 million adults in the US, that's $3400 for each adult for 2026. That's the equivalent of 2.3 hours per week, assuming a 40 hour work week and a median full time wage of $63,360.

The boondoggle (Inland Rail) is dead, long live the boondoggle (Snowy 2.0)! These sort of articles really should name as many of the firms and individuals involved in the initial cost benefit analysis as possible. On the cost side, $15bn turned out to be $30bn which turned out to be $45bn. And on the benefit side, 50% of the cargo was forecast to be coal right into the 2040s. #auspol

@anon_opin@mastodon.social And then someone tries to build a granny flat and finds out the 60 years of combined legal education and experience applied to a transfer of ownership was not sufficient and nobody knows who owns what (in older suburbs, anyway).

Tax reform proposal: The Australian government currently charges a Passenger Movement Charge (PMC) of $70 per departing passenger. This means that a billionaire in a private jet with 9 mates pays about $700, while a Qantas plane full of passengers pays about $17,500.

Replace the PMC with a flat charge of $15,000 per aircraft. Full commercial planes would pay about the current amount, private jets would pay heaps more. You'd probably have some exceptions for NZ and Pacific Islands and maybe Indonesia.
