@zeileis@fosstodon.org We (Diego Hernan and I) are discussing how {cffr} could parse a DOI from DESCRIPTION (https://github.com/ropensci/cffr/issues/82) to automatically use it in inst/CITATION and CITATION.cff.

If one submits a package to CRAN that has an explicit DOI field, will CRAN use that, or will it always generate a new DOI and will that be the one showing up on CRAN? I know there is no mandatory DOI field in DESCRIPTION but it's possible to add custom fields.

The rationale behind this is that package maintainers should only have to maintain fewer files manually, and ideally just the DESCRIPTION file; then inst/CITATION and CITATION.cff can be generated from the DESCRIPTION file. Currently, the only thing missing is the ability to fetch the DOI from DESCRIPTION (which the GH issue above is about), and we're trying to figure out what the current state is for CRAN.

@kristinmbranson@social.coop @steveroyle@biologists.social Just pitching in too - I really like using Zotero too! When I wrote in Overleaf, I had it synced to a Github repo and I’d update my .bib file through there. I often just exported a bib file of most or all my references from Zotero as the reference list would only be generated for citations I actually use in the text. Also wirth noting that with the new version 7, Zotero now has a really great UI which it used to lack!
