Recently finished @susankayequinn@wandering.shop 's Nothing is Promised series (as I promised I would 😏). Really neat structure, with each book handing off to another character, dealing with the ongoing events at ever higher levels.
Here's some unordered thoughts:
I was blindsided by book 3 containing a delightfully credible physics explanation of just-beyond-real quasiparticle phenomenon. Was not expecting, found myself grinning in wonder while biking around (audiobook version).
Reading https://thatshubham.com/blog/news-audit ( HT @pluralistic@mamot.fr ) and I'm astounded.
I had heard of web ad auctions.
I had heard of edge computing.
I did not realize they were pushing their ad auction calculations onto your device!
Knowing this, I think ad blockers are too polite a response. Are there any browser plugins that send them something like a decompression bomb? Or maybe that interferes in the ranking so the cheapest bid is returned as the winner? My device is the one deciding, after all!
I don't know if the ban we had before this flood of betting apps was good enough, but letting them operate at the volume they have is such a bleak, cynical move.
Let private companies profit off of addiction, then let taxes try to help them recover? Good gift, Ford, good grift.
@NiwlCraft@mastodon.art this might be too Canadian or too punny to be useful, but if your character is going to be surveiled and followed by people they're investigating, you could name them Pond and they can be worried about who's tailing them
