@brie@do.crimes.brie.gay interesting! I mostly write tech docs but I'll check this out. I tried a few note taking apps (e.g. Logseq) and had the same friction you describe going from structure and notes to actual content, and I'm mostly writing Markdown so your approach might be a good fit

I like the idea of an e-ink (or reflective mono LCD) tablet but I'd want to run Linux on it. I've been tempted by the PineNote but my experience with their hardware has been... mixed; and it's not cheap

@kirtai @alice my parents had a cat called Asparagus. They tried to get him to answer to Gus, but he insisted on the whole word being used. He also had a tendency to wander off for extended periods, during which they had to spend a little time each day shouting "Asparagus" in the street to see if he had returned from his travels yet

If my basic needs were met, I'd be delighted to clean and repair stuff, help people get around, move things around my city, garden in the park, whatever needs done. Doing a variety of useful things is how I want to spend my time, I just can't because I have to work. I don't think I'm alone

It feels bleak, but it looks like Spring. I really want to step into your paintings and just hang out, it looks so peaceful and hopeful there

@2qx@mastodon.social No; I'm suggesting that it is good for society if people have access to news, so society should collectively provide that access. I don't really care about allowing/preventing payment, or money, or states. As long as our hypothetical society still has money, if producing and delivering the news requires some money, then some sort of entity needs to collect contributions and make funding available. Personally I would prefer a utopia without money, but I don't have a plan for how to get there

@matt_ellery@mastodon.social my direct experience is very old. I used a Drift HD with Linux many years ago, and a couple of different GoPro models (3 and 4 iirc). No issues, and I suspect anything that uses a micro SD for storage will be fine since you can always just put the card in a reader and Linux does well on filesystem and video format support

@rberthier@oc.todon.fr I'll see what I can do; it's going to be quite a hectic week and I wouldn't want to power the machine up without looking at the capacitors in the power supply (it's been a while and I wouldn't want to break it), but if I get a chance I'll check it out. Failing that I'll mention this to the new owner so they might be able to look into it when they get the machine running

@marshalla99@thx.gg Noted; I'll not be able to make it to York that week and it's probably not worth the trip for him, but maybe someone is traveling the right way. It's a good option for retro machines if I can't find anyone who can collect. I have a couple of smaller retro machines there too, but they have more sentimental value and are easier to transport so I was planning to keep them; maybe his sheds would be a better home though, I'll ponder that

@leosam@mastodon.social Yeah, I'd love to keep it myself but I live in Romania and it's just not practical to try to move it that far (especially with the CRT, and I think it would be a shame to separate it from that). I hope someone relatively near the machine can take it while I'm in the area
Edit: I believe I have someone interested in the SPARCstation now, but feel free to register an interest if you like, I'll try to keep track. It makes me happy that there's so much interest in this nice old machine :)

@Shepharo@mastodonapp.uk I'm not in the UK anymore but interest in TDD was rare when I worked there. I used to argue that while it might be slower at first (and I'm actually not convinced even that is true), with TDD everything gets faster instead of slower as work progresses, and you get to keep that speed advantage for the life of the system. I'm a contractor so I tend to "meet people where they are" but I still encourage TDD. Nobody's going to retro-fit a good test suite later, so if you don't grow one while you build a thing, the thing will probably be expensive to maintain and short-lived

@Njord honestly, I'm conflicted: useful in limited cases and worse than useless. If you know what you're doing they can produce useful results, but they are misused in ways that are so wildly destructive that I think we'd be better off without them. Many of the things I see people use them to do can be more efficiently done some other way.
Sometimes you need some bullshit and I don't think human effort should be wasted producing it; but in those situations I think it's probably wiser to take a step back and figure out what you're doing wrong that you need bullshit in the first place.
