@theeclecticdyslexic@mstdn.social @ApostateEnglishman@mastodon.world @thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io given the existence of literally every single domesticated species, I'd argue that the only functional difference is the involvement of people. I would also like to raise the concept of humans as a part of nature. We are both a product of the world we live in, and a selection pressure on the world around us, just like every other species to have ever existed. Our obsession with separating ourselves from nature is arrogance.

@theeclecticdyslexic@mstdn.social @ApostateEnglishman@mastodon.world @thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io my point was solely in response to the idea that there is nothing like evolutionary pressure for LLMs during their development. Evolution is brutal, you survive to pass on your features, or you die. The development of LLMs will include that brutality towards models that don't meet the desired standards. The idea that there is something special about how evolution works because it's natural irritates me. It's simple brutality.

@ApostateEnglishman@mastodon.world @theeclecticdyslexic@mstdn.social @thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io 'there's no equivalent of an evolutionary "pruning" process to weed out falsehood or mediocrity, the way natural selection does with maladaptive genes' What the hell do you think the people training these models do with them when they aren't up to scratch? They prune the shit out of the results that aren't up to scratch. And yet model collapse has still been shown to be inevitable, as has the generation of false but plausible looking output!

@RonSupportsYou@mastodon.social I remember this. It's worse than that. When he asked how much it would cost he also offered to pay for it if it was less than some number of billions. I forget the exact figure. The WHO costed it at below that cost. Musk then got very quiet on the topic. _Then_ he bought twitter. And tried to welch on that deal having refused to do due diligence, and was sued into honouring the contract he agreed too.

@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social @stux@mstdn.social I disagree. That it hasn't been done yet doesn't mean it's impossible. There exist millionaires who have become rich through value creation. But many millionaires have also become so by assuming wealth is a zero sum game and taking the wealth from others. Millionaire to billionaire to trillionaire is simply a matter of scale, that all existent billionaires and trillionaire have done so through taking wealth from others does not mean that is the only way to do it.

@stux@mstdn.social I personally have no objection to the existence of a trillionaire. The objectionable thing for me is that they exist at the same time as people who are homeless, displaced by war, and/or having their very existence suppressed for ideological reasons. The super rich aren't a problem because they're rich, they're a problem because they get rich by expanding the suffering of others.

@lisamelton@mastodon.social on a slight tangent, I once got into trouble with work for participating in a chat about offensive language. I argued that being offensive is a useful tool in interpersonal communication, the main counter argument, and the one that started the conversation, was that foul language was always unacceptable. Throughout the discussion I was very careful not to use, or endorse, any foul language. Offending idiots is the right of all free thinking people.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca I mean, there's a point where a metaphor doesn't work anymore, because it's not the truth, just a way to explain part of the truth. If you need perfect accuracy you're just explaining reality. The paint metaphor also breaks down because there are tools for recreating paint colours accurately from pure pigments. Do that for (sxa), (sxb), and s, and you recover a and b. So it's not really suitable as a form of key exchange. But it is easy to understand on a basic level.

@daniellatz@mastodon.social @maxleibman@beige.party we all need to live in the world as it is, and not as it should be, that much is true, but the world as it is includes our desire, and capacity, to make it more like it should be. Yes there is other injustice, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying to end this injustice. If we don't end the injustice we see because other injustices exist then the injustices in the world will never end.

@maaikees@sw-development-is.social coding is just formalised instructions for a computer. The hard part isn't formalising the instructions you need to give. It's understanding the problem and identifying what instructions might possibly get to an acceptable solution. The problem with all "codeless" tools is that people who write code are seen as expensive, but the skill that makes them expensive isn't writing code, it's the skill the users of the codeless tools would need anyway.
