@eldritch48@mastodon.social @AnachronistJohn@zia.io @jschauma@mstdn.social I'm sure a discussion can have multiple aspects, and some of them are core aspects, while other ones are somewhat adjacent.
If you say my point is not a core part of the AI discussion, well, maybe, maybe not...
But your way of blocking it feels a bit emotion driven. Like the chain smoker I've described.

@eldritch48@mastodon.social @AnachronistJohn@zia.io @jschauma@mstdn.social It's both about BigTech products, and typical complaints about AI sound very much like what I said about Facebook back then. Usually you can just interchange them verbatim, and nobody would recognize it.
You saying "that's a different topic" is like a chain smoker who rails against alcoholism, and then someone comes along remembering you that your "alcohol" just has another name.
If you're on Instagram, don't complain about the state of the digital world.

Or was Facebook actually more annoying, but just not for these people that went along? When everyone suddenly was in WhatsApp and Facebook, while I wasn't, it definitely felt much worse to me than any AI offerings, which I can just deny without any direct consequences, or check for alternatives, or just wait. I don't see any point where - in my personal life - anybody or anything forces me into AI usage.

@eldritch48@mastodon.social @AnachronistJohn@zia.io @jschauma@mstdn.social You don't like my comparison because you are also fine with Facebook... Okay... I understand... :)
I'd say: Facebook users have - by being a Facebook user - lost all credibility when it comes to complaining about our current digital world. No matter what exactly. And no matter what fancy internet memes you can figure out. ;) They are part of a major problem before anything else. Sry to say that.

That's exactly like back then, when people abandoned email, websites, sms, etc, and replaced everything by Facebook.
For some odd reason, that was just not a topic at all. Basically everyone was fine with it. What was your stance back then?
AI stuff is doing more or less the same. It's somewhat less annoying, though, because they don't force their friends to make decisions.

@YourShadowDani@mastodon.social @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange If the audio/video of the meeting gets recorded (maybe visible to you and usable by you, or completely hidden), hasn't the privacy invasion then already happened? Getting a transcript from some AI doesn't seem like an additional problem, assuming you were already okay with the former. You just get at least something back, you could say. Or not?
(I'm not defending all that btw)

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange Does the privacy invasion start there? Or does it start when people decide to record the meeting? Or does it even start when someone forces you to use these tools?
I'm asking because I'm actually not sure. Does the usage of AI tools really make matters worse than it already was before? Or do the same privacy issues already apply without them?

@aesthr@wandering.shop I did nothing else than depicting a different perspective, in a friendly and polite way. Why can't Unix fans just be a bit more open minded?! Windows isn't a niche, and it works quite fine there unless you mix it with Unix. So it can't be *that* fundamentally bad. Anyways...

@aesthr@wandering.shop There was no brilliant additional effort that the Unix guys spent into filesystems to make them case sensitive, which the MS guys were not able to apply. It's just case sensitive (and even sensitive to various ways to encode the same character) because the Unix guys don't gave a shit at all.

@aesthr@wandering.shop And "I want paris and Paris to mean the same and not want to deal with ten different inferior UI level simulations" would not be a valid use case? I'm always puzzled when people complain I'd not respect their use cases, when I have the feeling that the opposite is happening. :) But again, in real life, I'm fine with how it is. It's just interesting for me to exchange ideas and standpoints.
Btw: I don't think MS was 'lazy'. Case insensitivity brings additional complexity, right?

@aesthr@wandering.shop Whether one would like it or not, but if we would declare case insensitivity as the ultimate default, and everyone would adapt to that one, we'd definitely have no problems either, right? The problems comes when you mix both approaches together.
Solutions on UI level - particularly in Linux land - have the problems that there will be 10 implementations, all somewhat different, and changing over time. And the Gnome guys do sth completely bonkers. Then better leave it as it is. :)

@aesthr@wandering.shop Yeah, also true... Maybe consider them as "legacy filesystems" and deal with them in a special way... ^^ That's probably what Windows Explorer would say it does. No, idk... My personal IT is solely case sensitive filesystems (beyond /boot/EFI I guess?!) and it's okay. I just couldn't say it's ideal for me as an end user, though. For humans "paris" and "Paris" typically IS the same... But beyond being a nerd, I never really cared a lot about it... It's okay.

@aesthr@wandering.shop Sure it leads to problems when both worlds clash together. But isn't it a bit too simple to just blame the 'foreign' one? Also, higher levels could only apply workarounds. "paris" and "Paris" are two different file names here, and to me as an end user, that's typically not ideal, and no higher level can actually solve that in a clean way.
But yeah, I'm fine with it since some decades, I'll be fine with it for the next some. :)

@aesthr@wandering.shop Unfortunately Linux doesn't even enforce that file names are valid UTF-8 or anything like that. So what *is* a character?
I mean, yeah, sure, I know what you mean. I'm telling that since 20 years when people ask me. There were also times, though, when I had preferred case insensitivity a lot, from end user perspective.
Sure, it's definitely a pitfall, because it can be surprising to novice devs.
