I feel guilty questioning the prevailing Mastodon culture, which feels (to me) like politics - and disagreements about politics - are frowned upon. Long-term Mastodon users seem to see Twltter as a battlefield - yet that wasn't my experience. Yes, there were lots of bots & trolls - but it was easy to block them. And so have some great interactions.

But maybe that was because of my (almost uncanny 😉) ability to rapidly identify - and block - bots/trolls/morons and fascists. So I've had quite a positive experience. My main problem with Twatter is it's new owner - and his intentions.

@jesseliberty@hachyderm.io @richieholland@ravenation.club Here on Mastodon, it feels like a refuge from politics. But my problem is that I *want* to discuss politics. I'm a newsaholic! And when Twatter dies, where are people like me supposed to go? If not to Mastodon?

@jesseliberty@hachyderm.io @richieholland@ravenation.club Most of my negative interactions on (the other place) were with those types of accounts who don't exist here - eg bots/trolls/bigots/racists etc. Which is brilliant. 👏 So I am *far* less likely to get into arguements on Mastodon. But I have also only ever used social media to discuss politics - never having joined FB, Insta, TikTok etc.

@kennykravitz@mindly.social @richieholland@ravenation.club My understanding of this instance (@mastodon.lol) is that it is mainly aimed at my community, the #LGBTQI+ family. So discussion of gender politics is kind of built in here. But today's far-right nowadays - be that Trump in the US, or Putin, Orban, or the governments of Poland and the UK over here in Europe - are dragging us unwillingly back into the political spotlight. To put a CW on a discussion of my #humanrights feels uncomfortable.

@danlharp@tooting.ch @richieholland@ravenation.club I haven't had any problems specifically from my instance - which is actually very easy going. Any negative feedback has come from a variety of instances. But at the end of the day, it's almost certainly down to me. I *like* the cut and thrust of politics. (And I'm also not a cat person!)

@richieholland@ravenation.club It's not about 'standards' or rules. It's about the culture. Any kind of disagreements seem to be frowned upon here. Mastodon feels more like an early version of Facebook - before it got infiltrated by the RW trolls. I can't really describe it better than I did in the Toot to which you are replying. Twitter was the only Social Media site that I had ever joined. *Because* of the politics and the debates.

@richieholland@ravenation.club On Twatter it was totally normal (for me) to challenge people's posts - often humourously - without it ending in an argument or a block. It's just debate. But that - feels - frowned upon here. Hopefully I've misunderstood. #TwitterMigration

@richieholland@ravenation.club 'I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.' (HAL 9000) If another - clearly - viable alternative (BlueSky?) turned up, then I could imagine migrating again. Here, I feel a bit like a refugee who has arrived in Kent on a dinghy. The reception here has not felt warm, and generally I'm just hanging out with people I knew from - the other place.

@feditips@mstdn.social Surely all it would need would be an 'Allow Political Content' option in the settings...? So that those of us whose main interest is politics *don't* have to scroll through adverts.

@feditips@mstdn.social As one of the newbies leaving Twitt... sorry - the 'Bird Site' - I recognise that there is an anti-conflict culture here on Mastodon. And - as a linguist who has lived and worked in many other European countries - I *totally* understand how inappropriate it is to criticize the culture of your host. But - for many of us - our timelines consist of nothing BUT 'Political Content'! Which - if Content Warnings are strictly applied - means only about two tweets are displayed per page. 🤔
