I now have a snippet that I send to writers when I’m asking them what an acronym stands for. “Before you use an acronym in a document that other people will read, think about your audience (now and in the future and in other places): will they ALL know what the acronym is? It might be obvious to you, but unless you are 100% sure that everyone knows the acronym (the UN? an ATM?), help your audience by typing out the full phrase. “Do you and your audience share the same concepts? Are you and your audience from the same place? Are you and your audience both from the present time? It's important to consider that for anyone who is outside your field, living in another place, or reading your text in the future, the acronym might not be as obvious as it is to you in your place and context right now.”
