Just mentioned this in another thread, but the XTEInk X4 is one of the most focused and portable e-readers I’ve come across. Less than $100 and isn’t locked down so you can load custom firmware on it. For anyone like me who finds most e-readers go unused because they don’t go with you, I’ve yet to find a better option.

You are correct that this is normal _for the OS_. The OS will use this data to determine your location. What is not normal is abusing the Bluetooth permission to send a list of scanned devices to _app vendor_. They should only be collecting the location, not the raw Bluetooth list. I don’t know what the app is to confirm, but the way they said it, they would be handing all of the _local device data_ along with the standard location permission. This is the extra data that can be used to isolate you more than just a location could. This is similar to browser fingerprinting, but worse because your phone goes with you everywhere. One final mention is that the app is likely not collecting that list once, but rather regularly, so they could build a profile on what devices you’re in range of and by extension where you are regularly, even if you chose to disable your location, since they’re using Bluetooth MAC addresses as their workaround.

Except that it sounds like this hooked into an app and sent all the info about those Bluetooth devices to the manufacturer, which some data collectors can use process of elimination to isolate you. Normal (privacy-respecting) Bluetooth devices do not pass this info to the service provider and only your phone uses it to pair with the device.

I’ve heard the explanation being that it’s a defense against treating dead bodies as alive and spending resources on them at a primal level. Just imagining when we first developed empathy and tried at length to care for those who we lost and evolution needed us to focus on the live ones.

I’ve bounced around for nearly 15 years in the world of Linux. Some of the ones I’ve used over the years: Ubuntu Linux Mint (+LMDE) Debian Arch KDE Neon Bazzite/SteamOS The one I use currently is EndeavorOS. I landed on it because it’s been the most reliable and consistent for me personally at running games out of the box without extra configuration.

It does suck at first. I’m out of habit at the moment, but when you actually just wake up at that time instead of the dreaded snooze loop, you come into the day more awake and alert than anyone else, on top of the fact that you’ve probably taken some time to watch, read, or listen to something to relax ahead of time. It can genuinely be the difference between a good day and a bad one.

I’m lucky enough to not have any dependents and so I just skirt by with my mostly part-time gig that makes just enough to keep me afloat. My stress levels have never been lower.

The most obvious one to me is the missing notch in the RAM slot. And this is more vague, but AI struggles with complex perspective in images like this and the whole proportions are just a bit ‘wavy’? ‘Wonky’? Not sure what it is, but things just don’t quite line up sharply like they do on a real motherboard.

Fun story about these. When I was a kid and first came across these, my classmates had convinced me that lemon was the weakest flavor. This meant that when I had one, it was way too strong, and I assumed all the others must be worse, so it was the flavor I always picked when offered. Moral of the story: don’t always take others word for it and be willing to try options that you’ve been told are wrong.

Too bad almost none of that still actually be implemented and will instead be used to target those who disagree.

This is saying that their _online_ MS account has somehow lost the database entry for Snipping Tool (something that should just be integrated into the base OS) being associated with their account, meaning that even though it appears installed and I’m pretty sure based on what I’m seeing the binaries are ready and waiting. The online store prevents it from launching. Definitely exclusive to MicroSlop.

Imagine being one of the developers who put their time and effort into the base OS tools back in the day (almost all of which we had as far back as 7) only to watch Windows 11 undo all of it.

This right here I think is the ultimate way to practice religion. It’s an excellent framework for helping understand your connection to the universe and how your morality intertwines. I’ve been reading up on Taoism and one of the things I resonated with is that it accepts the idea that you can worship anything. Even a rock. It’s not about actually believing that the thing holds power, but rather allowing yourself to give in a bit to the universe in an understanding that you are ultimately powerless. You have to give up some of your agency to the idea that there is power beyond your control and understanding and you have to accept that. If you believe you’re an individual being separate from the world around you, the world will catch up to that idea. Aggressively. But if you accept that the world does not cater to you, and if you surrender some of that responsibility to a higher power, you’re not nearly as blindsided when the world finds you.

Now I have to factor the time it took a trained engineer to design this 😭

I don’t really follow any holiday traditions anymore. My friends don’t get me stuff and I don’t get them stuff. I even stay home for Thanksgiving and don’t go to watch fireworks on the 4th. It’s not that I don’t get out, but more so that I avoid the calamity everyone else is in on those days. To me, it’s a day off work and some time to catch up on chores or projects.
