I like long walks on the beach at sunset.
But I don't. Because effort.
Seriously though I'll try and use this for sharing snippets of hobby stuff, whether thats the Supertruck racing I've got involved with somehow, maybe guitar if I dust it off, or if I dig out the #ESP32 to go with #HomeAssistant on my #Proxmox box I just set up.
It will be stuff anyway. Hopefully interesting stuff. Things in #tech, #photography, #biking, #motorsport, #fountainpen, and other things I will no doubt need to add here when I remember or get reminded.
I touch computers in my spare time and self host things. Oh yeah so #selfhosting I guess.
In my other spare time I renovate my house and do #DIY stuff. More recently I set up xmpp.nz as a chat server for kiwis to get away from the likes of facebook messenger.
Oh and I (used to?) play music. As mentioned above a #Guitar I still have and sometimes play, #Saxophone I used to have a couple of decades ago, I had 6 months of Drum lessons, and played Bass for our school band in Rockquest in the late 90's.
I have never done anything that cool since.

@dgar@aus.social this is very much how any conversation I have about it goes. I tell people I self host a bunch of stuff on an old computer in my garage and they look at me like I've grown another head. I guess I no longer fit inside the little box they had me neatly pictured in 🤷

@joeress@mastodon.social yeah I've sen some youtube musicians commenting almost exactly that; they're kinda just doing the layering loops into a "song" thats not really a song... but it kinda works.
I have been mulling it over for a bit, and decided I think it's kinda cool I reckon, the music and outfits are just quirky enough that it just works, and the music is still somewhat palatable for the general public. And people actually getting out and doing stuff is just good anyway.

@felimwhiteley @jasonzelek these movements help though; we all know it is potentially short term fix, however the user numbers dramatically dropping should be a warning for Mozilla if everyone complaining made the effort. Everyone continuing to download and install firefox will make them feel justified in putting that crap in.

@veronica@explains.social I just read the replies I see from shom and ewen, and yes, no other servers know about you until you hit them - either with a follow, or a follow back, or someone replying and dragging in the post they replied to... give it a few weeks and you'll be very happy with the change.
I have done this process a bunch of times from scratch and it's pretty normal to start out quiet/slow and then return to where you expect it to be as servers are aware of yours.
Nice work. Oh, I stood up Phanpy as well and use that as my frontend on both desktop and mobile browsers, seeing as GotoSocial doesnt have one.

I said I was just looking, and he still tried to steer me away from it "oh its really slow"... uhh no shit man, it only makes calls and does text messaging, it's actually small and fits in a pocket. Its basically the perfect phone. And it's only $39.
