“Literacy” down the line really hurts me. I’m an elementary school teacher, and I just had a conversation with my principal today that really upset me. He has a vision of the future where AI is ubiquitous and video takes such precedence over the written word that everybody doesn’t need to learn how to read. He thinks he’s a futurist. I think that version of the future sounds like a nightmare.

You’re not wrong. And they keep making up crazier and crazier nonsense. I remember when Operation Desert Storm was supposed to bring about Armageddon. And then it was W’s war in Iraq. And now it’s the war in Iran. Every time they move the goalposts, they also increase the stakes. It’s terrifying.

Or even hoja de laurel molida. And then you don’t have to fish it out.

I live in a country where ground bay leaf is a very common spice to use. It’s just another powdered spice in a jar or a bag like cinnamon or curry.

Just tagging on to add that if you haven’t read the novella I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, it’s worth your time. It has been adapted to film three times that I know of. The first was The Last Man on Earth, starring Vincent Price. Matheson was so upset with the finished product that he refused to allow his name on the film even though he wrote the original screenplay. The second was The Omega Man with Charlton Heston, which has its flaws but is still the best adaptation IMO. I had high hopes for the Will Smith film in 2007, but the creatures and the ending were entirely wrong. The original story is great, but it’s such a slow burn with a mindfuck ending that I have given up hope of ever seeing an accurate portrayal on film. It would have to be something on the level of a passion project from Peter Jackson or Guillermo del Toro, from a director who loved the source material enough not to change it significantly.

Apparently not. I had some friends in undergrad who tried several of the recipes, and they said it was a huge waste of time. (These guys were honors students in science majors, so I wouldn’t chalk it up to user error in all cases.)

The article indicates that there’s a monthly fee for the “service.” So it’s not a passive income situation.

The bar thing just sounds like they don’t clean their taps very well.

So much this. I live in a country with a sugar tax, so almost every soft drink on the market has part of its sugar replaced with some kind of sweetener. I didn’t drink a lot of soft drinks before, but now I can’t drink them at all.
