How odd (and maybe disheartening) to consider that it can be cheaper to fly and expend all the energy need to lift a big metal tube up into the air and back down, than it is to travel along the rails.

Got a job at a BYOD workplace, so I ended up having to repurpose my old devices as my work devices. Fortunately I had many from my hoard to choose from. Still get taken aback when I realize that most of my coworkers have all their work stuff connected to their personal devices without a second thought.

Surprisingly good in most cases. Main thing missing for me is support for programs directly talking to USB devices (understandably, the associated driver support is its own can of worms).

1000% agree. Had to install an older version of Pinta because it was also gnomed a while back. While I’ve yet to contribute to open-source projects aside from reporting issues, I’ve got my eyes set on something like libadapta. As soon as one of the programs I use on a daily basis gets gnomed, I’m going all in to soft fork libadwaita and restore as many GTK3 features as I can.

We chose from a list where students with earlier birth dates got to choose first. Perhaps a consequence of small school district combined with less commonly-learned language, but after the 3rd year with the same teacher, we tended to revert to our real names, just pronounced with an accent.

Making my phone’s home screen functional. Calendar widget on the left, notes widget on the right, 3 rows of frequently-used apps on the bottom. Went from having no calendar nor a quick place to jot notes, to having a severely overengineered planner with built-in notes that I didn’t actually use and didn’t fit in my pockets, to now finally having my day organized.

When the privacy laws in the US are so weak, it seems like maintaining the effect of data removal requires paying for the data removal service indefinitely. Is it worth it regardless? Are there any cases and criteria where one should pay for data removal, more so than the average person? Interested to hear if anyone here has seen noticeable benefits, beyond the mere fact that their PII have been scrubbed from data brokers and search sites.

Middle click failure plagues nearly every mouse I’ve owned, OEM, Logitech, wired, or wireless. I take full advantage of the middle click shortcuts like opening links in new tabs, but I don’t think I’m putting it through undue stress either. As far as I can tell, I’m clicking it with the same force as I would the other mouse buttons and much less frequently than the left click. Failure usually starts with occasional missed middle clicks, which after some point, rapidly progresses until it’s failing to register more often than not. At that point, everything else will still work perfectly. No improvement even if I take it apart to clean out what little dirt had accumulated. One of my mice has managed to avoid this fate far longer than the others but I’ve just recently stopped using it due to the rubberized exterior turning all gooey and sticky. The only middle mouse buttons that seem immune to all of this are the ones on ThinkPads. Anyone else notice this or could recommend a good mouse that can stand up to a bit of middle-clicking?

I write a brief journal entry each day. Would have loved to read the day-to-day musings of past generations in my family, so I’d like to do this now for posterity. I even designed a custom printable planner with space for it, Letter/A4 sized so I can easily scan them in once I’m done. It’s just a section of my planner so the context of what I did that day is right there and the limited space keeps me from feeling pressured to write more. Printed out because the digital equivalents never really worked well for me. That only captures a small amount of my life and I’m not big on taking photos, but even a brief daily journal entry takes much discipline, so I won’t push it and risk giving up. While I like to consume documents and photos on paper, I don’t trust it in the long run. Vulnerable to water, fire, UV, and theft. You could say the same for electronic media, but it’s easy to duplicate, encrypt, and verify with checksums (or replace if it fails). All of my photos and documents to date fit within 128gb with room to spare, so I store encrypted copies on hard drives at home, a SSD hidden among cables and chargers at work, on my personal laptop, and in a microSD in my wallet. All verified with btrfs scrub and synced at my leisure. Bought an automatic-feed scanner to gradually digitize the hoard of paper documents and photos I have remaining. I ought to look into digitizing old home VHS tapes from my childhood and backing up the really important stuff to M-Discs sometime, but that’s all I have time for now.

New appliances. A matter of time until the fridge chokes itself since the coils are covered in dust and impossible to reach without tipping the whole fridge over. Also sorely regret replacing the old electromechanical washer instead of repairing it. New one fills with too little water at random and apparently it’s a controller board issue with no easy fix in sight.

Perhaps inflating it with upgrades, but very few original parts remain on my ThinkPad X230. Swapped parts include the motherboard, RAM, SSDs, wireless card, fingerprint reader, keyboard, LCD panel, speakers, cooler, battery, screws, bezel, palmrest, and hinges. The multi-tool pen in my pocket everyday carry too. Originally had ruler markings, Phillips and slotted bits, stylus tip, and a level. Didn’t need the level and wanted it shorter so it fit in my key pouch, so I took all the parts out, sawed off part of the barrel, and put it all back together, sans level. Refills are easily available online or can be crafted simply by popping the ink stick out of a regular ballpoint pen and cutting it short. My 90s Chevy is also very repairable and the parts are still very plentiful. In no mood to get something newer, especially after seeing the engines and touchscreens of some my friends’ newer cars.

Kemove K87 with Red switches and o-rings at work. Keeps noise down and the tenkeyless layout is a nice compromise between desk space and functionality. Might switch it out for an ikbc tenkeyless with Cherry MX Silent Red switches that I got for cheap once. That I purchased to see if something without o-rings would feel better, but I’ll have to fix a couple broken switches first. At home, a no-name tenkeyless with blue switches because that was what was on discount and I didn’t mind the clicking. Before that, I used a Monoprice full-size with brown switches and o-rings to keep the loud pinging down. Miss the feel of the brown switches, but not how much space it took on my desk.

Have been guilty of this when placing an online order, one time I simply forgot, the other time an obligation presented itself and I didn’t have time to go out of my way and pick it up. As for ordering at the counter and abandoning, IDK. Could be having to run for some urgent matter, but I’d agree it happens way too often to be just that.

Some are assholes. Others have zero self-awareness. I suspect the unnecessary playing of audio out loud in public stems from a very similar cause. Have you noticed this phenomenon increasingly often, or has it been much the same throughout your years?
