I mentioned to a friend that I'd totally teach for a community-based free school as long as there was some way I could get paid for it.

And this being the dystopia we're in, he suggested advertising.

"This recess sponsored by Reese's Peanut Butter Cups."

"It's lunchtime, kids, brought to you by Palantir, maker of the finest surveillance equipment and software, so remember: don't be naughty!"

"Health class is held in the Trojan room. Trojan condoms. If only your parents had used them..."

This method of organization of a business is a step away from capitalism and toward a more community-based, solarpunk-like future. But it still works within today's capitalist-based legal structure. It's not "standard" by any means, but it's set up easily enough with a few important decisions during the startup process.

RE: @susankayequinn@wandering.shop

I'm gonna push this a step further. If you see something on this list that inspires an idea *in addition to art* such as an actual in-the-world project, do it!

Plants: start a little garden or throw native seeds in an empty lot

Protest: Call your reps or hold a protest sign at a busy corner near you

Voting: Register, or offer to take someone to the polls

Little Free Libraries: Set one up or help someone else do so

...and so forth.

Based on die rolls and a random latitude/longitude generator, it looks like I've got 5 pioneer species on land. Three (a gastropod, an arthropod, and a vertebrate) are on one continent, and two (arthropod and vertebrate) are on another. The gastropod's random location for emerging onto land was actually between the continent and an island chain, so I'm putting some on both and letting their geographic separation do its thing. Meanwhile the rift valley on Continent A evolved insects! 2/n

I think I've got a good system for using no more than 3d6 to simulate evolution up through at least the end of the paleozoic--there have been extinctions, but not a mass extinction unless you roll particularly poorly.

Now I'm trying it out on my latest science-based Earth-like planet 'simulation' and excited to see that my two land-pioneer vertebrates happened to randomly colonize two different biomes on two different continents. Exciting!

This seems interesting. Having just read "A Half Built Garden" the decision-making features intrigue me the most (at the moment). And I like that they are based on sociocratic process, which I'm a fan of.

RE: @michaelc@scholar.social

Just tried some, and it came out pretty good. At a 50/50 shrub-to-sparkling water ratio it's still pretty intense. Next time I use some I'll try 1/3 or 1/4 shrub.

Each step of making the shrub seemed to merge the raspberry and vinegar flavors until it turned out like super intense raspberry. The vinegary quality just came out as fruity acidity more than anything. Maybe the tiniest hint of vinegar in the aftertaste, but I'm not sure I'd notice if I weren't looking for it.

Which means you can be entirely competent, and do your absolute best, and still not get a perfect job for you because of factors you are entirely unaware of. Internal budget adjustments; changes in the marketplace; prejudice; personal preference; whatever. In other words, it's not helpful to advise people to get a job because that's not directly in their power. Try to differentiate what a person can do themselves vs. what someone *else* needs to do for that person to move forward.

Something I wish more people understood was "get a new job" or "just get a job" is not actually something a person can *do* -- it's something that *someone else* has to do: hire you. YOU don't have the power by yourself to make that happen. Which means despite anything you might do, you're still up against every single bias that every decision maker has in their heads, and you don't even know what they are. Or what those people's goals are in hiring. Or even IF they're really hiring. 1/2

A different game you play at another time with a different opponent might use those same pieces in very different and context-sensitive way. You do need all the pieces but that's not nearly sufficient to win at chess.

If "caring for each other" is your most important issue, what does that look like from a solutions standpoint? Are there political changes, or community projects or whatever that could make that change happen?

Question: Do you know what issue is most important to you? I emphasize the word "most" -- like, if you got a wish to fix one single problem, would you know your answer immediately, or would you have to think about it?

(Doesn't matter if it's big, like climate change, or small, like too many cigarette butts on the ground or whatever.)

If you are clear on your most important issue, feel free to add it as a reply.

Boosts encouraged for more answers.

@Daojoan@mastodon.social This resonates. In a work conversation, I said that I recognized I was feeling one way, but that the emotion wasn't really relevant to a decision at hand. I was told by a colleague that this was because I was "good at compartmentalizing" and that "most people" weren't able to make any choice--even what to eat for breakfast--without it being entirely determined by their in-the-moment feelings. I also lost a job because being able to "set aside a feeling for now" meant "disconnected"

Dark patterns, dark patterns, dark patterns.

Indeed's listing says I MUST create an Indeed account before continuing to the company website to apply. That's only true *with their button* but I can just, you know, go to the company website using my advanced internet skills of typing in the company name in my browser and going to the "Careers" section.

Also note that applying on the company's site won't give Indeed any of my data but creating an account to use a button will.

@elliek@zeroes.ca "tempered" is fussy but not impossible. Basically, you melt most of your chocolate for dipping (if you just dip now it'll cool and be soft and might 'bloom' or have dusty colors). A smaller amount of chocolate keep solid and grate into a powder. Mix that in with the melted stuff and let the residual heat melt it. This will help the right kind of crystal form for a shiny, crisp texture. I bet America's Test Kitchen has a video about it. (Admission: I usually skip tempering)

@augieray Yes, I had assumed that the map associated with the post was pulled from the underlying link, like is often done with shared articles. I would have thought the CDC would have set up their site to actually pull the real map rather than choosing to display an incorrect map as default.

@augieray Got your reply about the two different dashboards; I'm also noticing that the *display map* on this post of yours shows WA coded as "limited coverage" but that same map in that form doesn't show up on either of the pages linked here. I bet I'd looked at WastewaterSCAN, saw one reporting site, saw the inaccurate display map coded as limited info, and since they agreed with each other, assumed that was the current situation with the data.

For those who like the idea of the old CIA Simple Sabotage Manual, someone made one updated for the digital age.

With it being May Day / International Worker's Day, there's this "Specific Suggestion": "Whatever it is, do it tomorrow instead of today."

But instead it's, "we love money, regardless of where it came from. We promise we won't look behind the curtain, even if we know what's there."

@emilymbender @rbmath Within the last few months I've been asked for consent to care, and consent to record. At the time, I assumed "record" meant saving the audio for reference when writing up notes... now I'm going to have to specifically ask what "record" means, if data is transmitted, what happens to the recording, etc. I *might* be okay with automated transcription if it's done locally but no guarantee of that. Should have been more vigilant.

Steam's like, "to start playing chess, get out the chess board and pieces. Put the pieces on the board and unlock your front door and any safe containing valuables. Write your master password on a piece of paper and attach it to your refrigerator. Decide who is is going to play white and who is going to play black. Optional: start chess timer." Some parts of this plan I'm cool with, and other parts...well, not so much.

I "love" how Steam has a whole page called "Programs Which May Interfere with Steam" that's just all "anti-virus software, VPNs, anti-spyware software, firewalls, security programs..." and their advice is try disabling them.

Yeah, to play your game you just have to shut down all your security and allow spyware.

Um... or maybe let me play my chosen games without spying on me? How can I set up that option?
