I just finished 1916 by Keith Jeffery. It's an interesting read, good not great, but props for highlighting the participation of Africans, Asians, women, and other groups not typically discussed in the wider context of World War I.

Jeffery spent a lot of time discussing commemoration and remembrance, and one line toward the end really stuck with me... 1/2

Bard and Botstein are characterizing this as a "retirement" (he's 79), with all the usual long-time faculty/administrator retirement trappings, like remaining on the faculty and living on campus.

I don't see how any successor president is meant to function while Bostein is still on campus. Following a fifty-year tenure would be a hard act under any circumstances.

@nukehavoc oh yeah, I follow Jon :). I did some back-of-the-envelope math. The longest run in the US might be Miami-Seattle, via Washington DC and Chicago. Two trains, the Floridian (Miami-Chicago) and the Empire Builder (Chicago-Seattle). 6,775.2 km (4147 miles). 99 hours, including a 6-hour layover in Chicago.

• Everyone's lugging an enormous CRT with a small display size
• At least one person needs to crack their case to install a 10/100 ethernet card
• Someone needs the IPX and TCP/IP protocols enabled on their system
• Everyone spawns Starcraft from the one friend's CD
