Because of the plague, we're home schooling. Getting through some maths work (based on the national curriculum) with my 10 year old, and there's already some equations (eg. 100 - 43 = 85 - x ) sprinkled in there. I don't remember doing these until Year 8 or 9.

Does anyone remember when they did these at school?

I left the internet for the afternoon and evening. I just got back and now there is an ebola outbreak. Ffs.

When we bought our land in 2017, there wasn't much here, basically an old paddock and an easement into a creek, which we discovered the neighbours had been running their grey water into. They were new to the area too, but their house was built in the 60s. So, lots of disinfectants and god knows what into the creek for 50 years.

There were a few fairy wrens around, some earth worms, but otherwise everything seemed kind of... reduced?

Since we built and started (slowly) planting a garden, and got the neighbours to sort out their grey water situation, I've been noticing all sorts of different things coming into the garden, including -

  • 30 species of birds, including grey faced herons
  • Many different kinds of beetles
  • Frogs. You never used to be able to hear them in the evenings, but now with the window open, it sounds like a good population.
  • All kinds of butterflies
  • Crickets! This year is the first year I've seen/heard them here
  • Snails! Taken for granted, and a pest, but I haven't seen one here for 6 years, until a couple of weeks ago.
  • Lots of skinks

I guess what I mean to say is that even if the world is shit, improving small things around you can really improve things more than you imagine they will.

@mackayim2022 On a purely social level, could the increased infection rates in young children simply be because parents are more likely to take that age range to the doctor?

@anubis2814 Not sure where you're getting the fear aspect from? All of the people who are still masking - myself included - aren't doing so out of fear: but from one or a mix of things, including community care; ensuring their chronic illness doesn't worsen; taking practical steps to avoid chronic illness; avoiding many of the still getting researched knock-on effects of covid; protecting their children; projecting an unwell loved one and also just enjoying not being sick with *anything* We've done our risk analysis and decided that wearing a mask is akin to wearing shoes and it doesn't bother us at all. Also - I'm in Australia and we have a few waves a year still, and we had a massive flu season over Christmas. It's summer here then. #covidisnotover

Excellent article about masking being unreasonable and more, the unreasonable burden placed on people who still do -
