Well, that is the DSA no?
But as the platforms keep on draging their feet "it's to difficult, it does not work", etc. etc.
the European commision is now saying "OK, we will create a age-control system ourself, and then you cannot say you cannot do it".
As said, I understand that the privacy community looks at this and sees all kind of red flags everywhere; but as long as the community does not come with a proposal themselfs, for me it are all hollow words.

By the way, concerning "kids". Remember the problem we are trying to solve here is the "if we get them hooked as tweens, we have them for life" technique used by social media platforms to get people addicted.
So my challenge to you is, what system do you propose that can counter this, is a way that also safeguards your privacy and do not excude the groups you mentioned.
Give us some very practical proposal to achieve this goal.

First, I agree that the argument of protecting the kids is used a lot, but that does not mean it is always fake.
If you look at how social media operate and why they explicitaly targets kids that young, there is a reason for it.
In the end, it is plain "what are the requirememts" and "how do we solve the problem".
Perhaps you can come up a sollution to make sure everybody has an identity-card. There is a reason the UN has projects to make sure all chlidren in ...

Is it me, or is for a homeless person being able to go on social media to see the (probably fake) holiday pictures of other people to prove what a wonderfull live they have probably not the most important thing in his/her life.
As said, the thing about his discussion is that the privacy community seems to be very good at finding reasons why "it cannot be done" .., but does not seems be be able to ...

@ePD5qRxX problem:
- social media platforms know that if you can get kids younger then 14 year on their platform, they do not yet have the mental ability to resist the stimili and it is very easy to get them addicted to the platform
- these platforms say they have systems to stop kids to join below a certain age, but -due to the reason above- they do a very bad job
your job: work out a system that provides a "proof of age" from a trusted source of truth and is privacy-friendly.
please advice

@EUCommission do not not most people already have apps in their phone that have access to the identify information of yourself or your kids (if they are minor) like banking apps or government apps?
So I do not think that the backend is the most difficult problem.

The problem is that I have seen very few proposals by the community on they would do this. (i.e. technically)

Why?
Because an app provides a legal "yes' or "no" answer to the question "are you over 18 or not?"
