MacBook only good if you're willing to trade user freedom and some usability for "don't have to think about it" + long term higher cost if anything on it breaks. Display repair on a Mac, at minimum 700$. On Lenovo, at most 200 + your time (an hour)

Every other component is replaceable. You can't replace the chips on laptop boards either, sometimes there's just physical realities that prevent a perfect adherence to values.

Capitalist company gonna capitalism and an AI workstation was such a desired niche product that they sold out instantly and were batched out for a while. I also am not a fan of these kinds of profit-minded decisions but I'm not sure what the realistic alternative is within this current system.

Since you're a prof I think you get where I'm going here: framework is suffering from moral contagion for having association with DHH, without any consequentialist analysis for what that association actually looks like (a mention of omarchy on twitter). Thus we find ourselves in a moral absolution situation, they are now "tainted." I'm not arguing against moral absolution, necessarily, but I do believe that there's no coming back once stuck here.

As humans we're more able to attribute behavior to faces - Nirav being a very public face of his company, DHH being a very public piece of shit, it's easy for our minds to associate the two and ignore the material reality of the interaction between framework and omarchy. Whereas AWS, the IDF, and ICE are faceless, more difficult to humanize the far more devastating material reality of their relationship.

To clarify, my understanding is framework:

Sent a laptop to DHH (because of Omarchy - they send laptops to distros to help ensure better support)
Posted on a blog about Omarchy being an interesting new "distro" (it was exploding in popularity at the time)
Set up a booth at rails conf - the only rails conf, mind you, since the other one shut down

Nothing they did seems to be anything other than capitalists doing capitalism.

But yes, they dropped Omarchy https://frame.work/tw/en/blog/framework-sponsorships So right, the other defaults are bad but we're stuck with them. And what happened when one laptop vendor came along and tried to (succeeded, really) do the right thing in that space? We found a Violation and just obliterated them for it, and refused all repentance. Why would anyone else try in other spaces?

If I may venture to guess, are you thinking something along the lines of, "idk I just think framework is bad, move on?" On the one hand that's social pressure working, on the other, that's dogmatism and hyper normalization. For whatever reason we successfully cancelled framework but failed to cancel so many far worse, presently harmful, but normalized entities.

@maikel yup I don't understand it at all. As soon as you try to do the right thing you make yourself a target for crucifixion. In the USA I get far more criticism from liberals for the fact that I voted for a communist than the trump supporters get for voting for trump. Somehow the problem is more my fault as a member of the 1% of third party voters than the 52% of voters who voted for trump. I still don't understand this paradigm. I wonder if there's a word for it.

Framework tried, stumbled, recovered (doesn't sponsor omarchy anymore), but is now off the table, so we're all back to buying from vendors that give material support to the IDF and fill our machines with bloat ware and engage in planned obsolescence? Surely there's a better middle ground?

There's no laptop manufacturer you can buy from with the level of repairability and Linux support that framework offers - so why doesn't the "I have no choice" apply here? Your only alternative is a company that doesn't have the same level of repairability but also almost assuredly does something terrible - dell for example donated machines to the IDF.

@kboyd @maikel I'm gonna challenge you on this then, because the effort/outcome ratio on not using s3 vs not buying framework because they gave a laptop to DHH imo is heavily in favor of not using s3. Framework has never forced workers to pee in bottles and DHH has never contracted with the IDF. So I'm gonna be annoying about it but this is genuinely something I want to explore here: why one, and not the other? Why is framework's relatively minor past crime weigh heavier than IDF support?

It's like, either be perfect (impossible) or be evil, and the evil ones people will just shrug their shoulders and give money too. Btw the UK sounds a major downgrade from Spain lol why would you do that
