I'm so beyond done with Telegram. An instant messenger should at least be end-to-end encrypted, yet Telegram treats it as an optional feature with a protocol that hasn't been vetted by anyone but themselves. Meanwhile the app is getting to Discord-levels of nonstop advertising that nags you to buy their subscription service. I get that nothing comes for free, but if I don't trust your security and the only features you're selling me are features I don't want that you shove down my throat anyway, then I'm not gonna buy the service.

Anyway I'm gonna look into spinning up a CubHub Matrix server. I'm tired of untrustworthy corporations and nonstop advertising.

@PennyOaken@mastodon.social I don't think app developers saw themselves as making money at the expense of Reddit. The clause you linked doesn't read to me like, "don't charge money for your app", it read more like, "don't use the API calls to generate revenue" ie don't write an API bridge that can be used to collect data for sales. It also doesn't seem like third party app developers are saying don't charge for the API, they're saying don't effectively shut down apps by charging way too much. There's just a ton of options Reddit could have taken here, and none of them were explored. Even just adopting the moderation tools that third-party applications have would have softened the blow immensely. I think not only is Reddit not without fault, they're entirely at fault.

If they want advertisements, there's ways to implement that into the API and make proper developer agreements that require developers to show them with the threat of revoking their API key. Similarly, they could require some kind of Reddit Premium for API access by third party apps. Those would obviously be shitty, but it seems less thermonuclear than going to war with every moderation team and nuking every feature that diehard users enjoy. It just seems like Huffman is on some ego trip and he's not going to let anyone tell him he's not the boss. They could have easily put the development time into making proper moderation tools, but instead he's just going to jam his fingers in his ears. Typical CEO. :blobfoxdisapprove:​

@PennyOaken@mastodon.social I don't really get their end-game here. The site only functions because of volunteer moderation doing their job for them. If you remove all the people who make the site run, then what are you left with?

@hankgreen It depends on if that mixed use space has something useful to the community at the street level or if it has just another stupid overpriced Urban Outfitters.
